Accidents Give Defense Output 'Kick in Teeth'
The efficiency of defense production in 1940 took a nastier kick in the teeth from Old Man Accident while employees were away from their jobs than while they were at work. The new edition of Accident Facts, the National Safety Council's annual statistical volume, reports that 27,000 employed persons were killed by offthe-job accidents last year, compared with 17,000 accident fatalities suffered on the job. Finding skilled employees to replace the victims of off-the-job accidents severely complicates the currently acute job of employers to find skilled employees to staff defense industries and related activities, the Council pointed out. The man days lost from production due to off-the-job accidents at least equalled the man days lost because of non-fatal occupational accidents.

More Accidents Happen To Men Than To Women
Last year, in the age group from 25 to 44 years, five of every six deaths resulting from accidents were suffered by men, a higher proportion in favor of female prudence than was found in any other age group. This indictment of the male as the more careless of the sexes is not contained in one of the many statistical analyses of accidents in the new edition of Accident Facts, the National Safety Council's annual statistical volume. Motor vehicle accidents were the nemesis of the 25 to 44 year-olds-46 per cent of the accident deaths resulting from this cause. Falls killed 12 per cent. Burns and railroad accidents each were responsible for eight per cent of the accident deaths in this group.

Florida Near to Most of States
Florida is within forty-eight hours of more than ninety per cent of the people of the United States. Using regular train schedules every State in the nation, save ten, can be reached by rail from Jacksonville, Florida, within forty-eight hours. Shipping to and from every quarter of the globe enters and leaves Florida's ports. Water transportation along the Atlantic Coast affords rapid trade exchanges between the industrial East and our State. Trade between North and South America now aggregates two and onemillion dollars per day. Florida ports are the logical places for exchange for much of these commodities.

Accidents Top Diseases as Fatality Cause
Accidents kill more persons between the ages of 3 and 24 than does any disease! Between the ages of 3 and 38 accidents kill more males than any disease! These facts are reported in the new edition of Accidents Facts, the National Safety Council's annual statistical volume. Among males of all ages, accidents kill a greater number than any disease except heart disease, which is by far the most deadly, and cancer. Among females of all ages, accidents kill a greater number than tuberculosis. However, five diseases kill more females than among the females-heart disease, cancer, cerebral hemorrhage, nephritis and pneumonia.
Army Intelligence Rating High Selective Service Survey Shows
The high type of intelligence among the men being recruited for the armed forces by the Selective Service System, as serted Brigadier General Vivian Collins, State Director of Selective Service, today, is impressively revealed by a recent War Department analysis which shows that 36 percent of the trainees inducted into the Army by last July 1 have a high school education or better. Army standards, the Director pointed out, require a minimum education equivalent to the fourth grade in grammar school. Statistics compiled at National Selective Headquarters and, recently announced by President Roosevelt, show that 4 percent of the Selective Service registrants who have been examined for induction into the Army have been disqualified for lack of sufficient education. Even that five percent revealed as lacking the equivalent of a fourth grade grammar school education is a condition undesirable to American ideals. Nevertheless, the general picture is much brightened by these Army statistics, concerning the 693,948 selectees who had been inducted by last July 1. These data show that 619,293, or about 91 percent had a grammar school education or better. Result of examinations of the approximately 700,000 selectees inducted by last July 1, General Collins said, showed that 32 percent had completed grammar school, 7 percent first year high school, 9 percent second year high school, 7 percent third year high school, and 23 percent were high school graduates. Among those who had received high education, 4 percent had attended college for 1 year, 3 percent for two years, 1 percent for three years, and 4 percent were college graduates. In addition, 1 percent were college post graduates. Only 9 percent had less than a complete grammar school education.
Patterns of Traffic Mishaps
Unless you sew a fine seam as a safe driver or pedestrian, here are the patterns of traffic accidents that may kill you, according to the new edition of Accident Facts, the National Safety Council's annual statistical volume of accident data: Urban Areas-The victim is a pedestrian, struck and killed while crossing a street at an intersection. This was the pattern for 29 per cent of fatal traffic accidents in cities during 1940. Urban Areas-The victim is a pedestrian, struck and killed while crossing a street BETWEEN intersections. This pattern for the second largest group of city fatalities-26 per cent. Rural Areas-The victim or victims are drivers or occupants of motor vehicles which collided head-on or sideswiped each other -19 per cent of rural traffic accident fatalities. Rural Areas-The victim or victims are drivers or occupants of cars which left the roadway for one reason or another on STRAIGHT roads-14 per cent of the rural death toll. Rural Areas-The victim or victims are drivers or occupants of cars which left the roadway for one reason or another on CURVES-10 per cent of the rural total. A variety of other patterns of accidents accounted for the remainder of both urban and rural traffic death totals.

Home Is Safe Place? Don't You Think So!
So you think the average American home is a safe place? Then consider this- The new edition of Accident Facts, the National Safety Council's annual accident statistical volume, reports that in 1940: A total of 33,000 persons were killed in home accidents. Another 140,000 suffered some degree of permanent disability. And 4,710,000 persons suffered some degree of temporary disability! National Safety Council statisticians estimate that in 1940 there probably were anywhere from 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 additional cases-bad bruises and bumps, even lacerations-which required nothing more than treatment with a few drops of antiseptic and a patch bandage, and did not handicap the victim in his normal routine of work or play. And the factors most frequently involved in home accidents? Poor judgement was the personal factor most frequently involved -in 24 per cent of the cases. Disorder-poor housekeeping in that part of the home where the accident occurred was the most frequently factor frequently involved-18 per cent of the cases.
