Red Cross Food Boxes Delivered

One of the bright spots in the European war is the way in which the American Red Cross has been able to ship more than 100,000 food boxes to Allied prisoners inside Germany. Not only has the American Red Cross been able to report safe delivery by the International Red Cross at Geneva but American donors of the food boxes are getting postcard receipts, signed by the prisoner. Within a broader program in which the American Red Cross provides food packages, clothing and comfort articles for general distribution among Allied prisoners on behalf of friends and relatives in this country. Despite disrupted postal communications, more than 5,000 receipts have come back to Washington. They are passed on by Red Cross chapters to the donors. From the cards of gratitude that are beginning to come in, Red Cross food packages are meaning quite a bit to the estimated 1,500,000 Allied prisoners confined behind barbed wire here and there in Germany. At Geneva, the American Red Cross maintains a reserve of food packages which are shipped from this country via Lisbon. At Lisbon a Red Cross boat, sailing under a special agreement between belligerents, carries the packages to Marseilles, where they are loaded to Geneva. The food packages weigh 11 pounds. Their contents have been carefully chosen by nutrition experts familiar with customary deficiency in prison diets. Here's what they contain: One 14-ounce can of irradiated evaporated milk, one 8-ounce package of hardtack, an 8-ounce tin of cheese, one 8-ounce tin of instant cocoa, one 15-ounce tin of sardines, a 12-ounce tin of pork, 12-ounce tin of corned beef, two 6-ounce chocolate bars, 4 ounces of granulated sugar, one 7-ounce tin of powdered orange juice, 16 ounces of prunes, four ounces of coffee, 2 packages of cigarettes and 21⁄2 ounces of smoking tobacco. While the American Red Cross forwards supplies for prisoners of war in Germany, it also serves as an intermediary for gifts to German and Italian prisoners interned in Canada. When funds or supplies are received from the German or Italian Red Cross they are transmitted to a delegate of the International Red Cross in Canada who visits internment camps where Axis soldiers and civilians are interned.

Lindley de Garmo Auxiliary Reports Many Activities

Many pieces of business were accomplished Tuesday night at the meeting of the Lindley DeGarmo Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, with the largest attendance so far this year present. The unit voted to buy a new stove for the auxiliary kitchen in order to be better equipped to sponsor a home canning class. Reports indicated the membership is 60 per cent to date, goal is 100 per cent by Nov. 1. Unit will give set of flags to Girl Scout troop number 41. Final plans were made for the visit of the department president Mrs. M. L. Montgomery to this unit on Nov. 18. New members introduced were Mrs. Jessie Swin and Mrs. Vallie Hill. Mrs. Walter Miller, Mrs. Thomas Parks and Mrs. Estella Phillips reported sick. Appointments included, Mrs. A. L. Buzzell as a member of National Junior Activities Committee; Mrs. L. M. Duncan, state auxiliary representative to this Crippled Children's Commission district. The auxiliary and legion plan a breakfast on Armistice Day to which all men and women who served in the world war and their families are invited. Mrs. W. M. Martin is taking reservations.

FORMER PASTOR MAKES GOOD

Dr. V. Ward Barr, former pastor of the University Baptist Church, has been more than favorably received in Corinth, Miss., where he is now pastor of the Baptist Church, according to Dr. James H. Thayer, 1115 Lisbon Street, who received a letter from his (Dr. Thayer's) sister in Corinth. The letter says, "Dr. Barr has big congregations, also invitations from other congregations. We had an all-day meeting in our (Presbyterian) church; he and his wife were invited. He made a talk and she sang for them. Folks are just charmed with him and say he has a real personality and preaches very spiritual and helpful sermons."

Jay Eggleston Operates Tepee

Jay Eggleston, well known night club operator in the Miami area has taken over the operation of the Tepee on the Trail at Red Road. Jay's first efforts have been to get extensive renovations under way. These plans call for a thatched roof effect to be installed over all the booths and the bar, with mirrors and other decorative effects throughout. The Tepee is expected to make its formal opening next week, although business continues as usual during alterations. An adagio orchestra and a large floor show will be featured at the Tepee starting next week. The Tepee plans to continue its 24-hour a day operation, with the addition of dining room service scheduled for the opening.
