CORAL LAKE NEWS Youngsters Exercise Tonsils As Glee Club Is Formed

By VERA BARNES The big storm is a thing of the past and activities are back to normal. Out at Coral Lake, the small fry are all practicing their scales. A newcomer to the camp, Mrs. John H. Britton, has started a glee club for the six to six-teeners. She is the wife of Professor Britton of the University of Miami. University students of Botany under Professor Ray Woodbury, are helping to restore our arboretum. A great deal has already been accomplished and later on, classes are to be held right in the arboretum. Mrs. Roberta Freeman is helping them along, she lives right in the section and knows where every plant and tree is and should be. Interesting Background There's an interesting background story about a young couple that just moved into camp. He is former Captain Bill Pendleton, and she is the former Amelia DiMurro, of Naples, Italy. They met while he was stationed there while attached to a railroad battalion. Later he was sent to southern France and then to Germany, and finally home in August of 1945. As soon as he could, he sent for Amelia, and finally, two and a half years after he had last seen her, he met her at the dock in New York, and they were married in New Hampshire. After their honeymoon, they drove down here so Bill could register at Miami U. where he's majoring in electrical engineering. There are a lot of new faces, and some that we've seen before, at Coral Lake. The students are coming in prior to registering for the fall season. Some of the new students are Carlton J. Johns of Chicago, James Speer of Lansing, Michigan, Herbert Stevens, who is majoring in mechanical engineering, and Curtis Dowling, Jr. of Palmetto, Florida. Bill Mundis, Preston Izenmiah, and Bob Hutton, all of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, spent the summer painting houses. They even took out union cards! Joe Jennings, also of Red Lion, a law major, drove down with the fellows, and is busy looking for a place to live so he can send for his wife! Moving Soon Dorothy and Jim Wright are leaving the end of the week for Dania, Florida. Jim was working on the new campus, but his job has been completed, and he is going into the neon sign business with Mr. Gilette, Dorothy's father. We have several other newcomers, among them are Mrs. Marion O'Dell from Marietta, Ga., Milton Gafford from Pensacola, Al B. Dees of Coral Gables, and Robert P. Hamilton of Sweetwater, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hansen are here visiting Vera and Les Barnes, after an extended trip covering a great deal of the United States. Later they will go on to Bradenton Beach for the winter. We'll soon be saying goodbye to Margaret and Gene Priest. They'll be moving to a park closer to Gene's work. Margaret hates to leave, but it will be so much more convenient for the two of them.

Youth Center Follies Please Audience

(Continued From Page One) reached Hollywood perfection. Joan Browne and Woody Woodmansee adopted "Hello My Baby" from "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now"; Terry Strain gave his rendition of "Mrs. Murgatroyd" from the movie "Blue Skies"; and Jack Murphy became a local Al Jolson when he sang two of the songstor's favorite hit tunes. Merry Circus A merry circus complete with baton twirlers, marionettes, peanut vendors, a barker, a side show, and a horse race delighted the audience as the largest and most colorful final act. Numbers in between the acts included popular songs by the Webb Sisters, a Chair Dance, Barbara Jones singing two semi-classical songs, a piano and accordion trio by Mr. Philip Hittleman and Stewart and Sheldon Hittleman, and acts by "Bing" Martin, Mildred Smith and Jacquleine May. Chorus Named Members of the chorus for the various sets were: Vestelle Baker, Jeanette Belcher, Kay Duggar, Gene Gardner, Corine Gustafson, Nancy Healy, Hilda Hoyt, Patsy Hoyt, Gloria Kurtz, Ann Meyer, Carol Rudolph, Bobbie Jean Smith, Donna Witherill, Mildred Smith, Joy Drude, Luelle Fossum, Norma Foster, Pat Blount, Ann Bowers, Pat Harshbarger, Patsy Howard, Gloria King, Judith Rimpey, Beverly Jones, Myrna Anderson, Jackie Eads, Joan Browne, Norma Leduc, Janice Taylor, Bruce Booher, Fred Ingoe, George Smith, Bill Powell, and Zeo Aydelott. Jacqueline May was Mistress of Ceremonies and Truman Lord was pianist for the follies which were produced and directed by Miss Ward.

Ponce Routes Gesu 46-18 In Opener

(Continued from Page One) through the entire Crusader team, both in the third canto. Ponce marched to her three spare touchdowns on a sequence of plunges by fullback Jack Stahl in the second quarter, a 73-yard sprint by quarterback Tom Fitzgerald early in the second half, and on an 18-yard Joe-Byrd to Bill Umphreys pass at the start of the final chapter. Placekick specialist Roger Norvell made four successful conversions in seven attempts to bolster the Cavalier total. Trailing by forty points in the last stanza, the Crusaders made an honorable attempt to get back in the ball game when the Cavalier reserves fumbled twice deep in their own territory. Gesu's substitute halfback, Henry Menendez, won an eleven yard dash for the coffin corner against the Ponce secondary for the first, and co-captain John Bush duplicated the trick from the 26 three plays before the end of the game. Neither conversion attempt was successful and Ponce finished with possession of the ball on their own 15. Scoring by periods: Gesu | 0 | 0 | 12 | -- | 18 Ponce | 14 | 14 | 12 | 6 | -- | 46

Stork and Storm Stop News From Frog Hollow

By MARY HICKEY Riviera-Times Correspondent The howling winds of a tropical hurricane plus a threatened visit by the stork right in the middle of the big blow prevented your correspondent from reporting the Frog Hollow news last week, for which we offer our humble apologies. The storm has gone, the stork is still awaited and here's the news. Like a Veteran Frog Hollow rode out the big blow like a veteran despite the fact that it was weathering its first big storm. With the exception of a few missing roof tiles and some uprooted shrubbery, no damage or casualties were reported. "Nook" Tuckerman wins the "kewpie doll" for being the first one to get his awning down as well as the first one to get it back up again—and in addition deserves a vote of thanks from your correspondent for that ride through a fifty-mile gale to the hospital. (Where is that doggone stork?) Acted as Guide A round of applause goes to Fred Diestelhorst for obligingly guiding a number of his neighbors to a huge garage for storing their cars and for keeping his big Army truck available for use during the emergency. And here's a big hand to all Frog Hollowites for the splendid community spirit shown during the emergency, with everyone pitching in and lending a hand in the business of "battening down the hatches. In true Navy style we say, "Well done!" Our belated congratulations to our "mayor", Captain Bill Davies, who celebrated a birthday the week of the storm. We hope he enjoyed that beautiful cake his wife and "Boots" Schmitt whipped up together. Another birthday celebration was held September 23 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harrell Fincher, 3837 S. W. 60th Court for their young daughter Mary Frances. Guests included Betty Ann Estes George Ann Gaither, Kip Paskewich, Patsy Macarron, Judy Wilcox, Joy Kumerdank, Robert Turner, Isabel Patterson and Caroline Patterson. A table, set up on the lawn, was decorated in Hallowe'en colors and the traditional cake and ice cream were served, with Hallowe'en favors for each small guest. The high spot of the party was a treasure hunt for articles hidden around the grounds. Betty Ann Estes won first prize by finding the most articles.
