SCHENLEY PARK NEWS No Need for Ark Here; High Ground Foils Rains
By PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Correspondent Schenley Park this week is emerging happily from her water soaked yards along with a great satisfaction in knowing that should the rains come again and again she is one of the highest spots in the greater Miami area and will be one of the last to jump on the Ark in case the necessity ever arises! Children and Animals There is little doubt that children and animals will do a fairly good job of introducing one in a neighborhood — for better or for worse — ! In our case the acquisition of a little white feline proved a pleasant adventure in meeting the Barefields of 5766 Devonshire Boulevard. Word got around via the kiddie-land grapevine that the Barefields had some kittens ready for adoption. Mr. Barefield, after serving three and a half years in the Army Construction Corps returned to South Florida to go into business with the construction Company of Babcock and Lamont. The Army introduced him to both his lovely wife, Em, and business partner. The youngsters, Rusty, three, and Barbie, one, are well entertained and protected by their beautiful police dog, Mamie, and mamma cat, Mickey, giving Mrs. Barefield ample time to indulge one of her favorite recreations—reading "who done its" and it was indeed a surprise to note that she was just finishing "Dead Run" recently written by Coral Gable's own Helen Holley. Cooks and Bakers With all of this current discussion on meatless Tuesdays and Eggless Thursdays those Schenley Parkites who are not familiar with fact that besides the two families of Cooks, whom we spoke of last week, that in the same block there are also two families of Bakers, had better take advantage of an unusual situation! Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baker of 5816 S.W. 31st St. have lived here for several years with their lovely youngsters, Frank, Millne and Vestal who attend Ponce de Leon High School. Frank has just recently recuperated from an operation. The other Bakers, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baker of 5821 S.W. 31st St. with small daughters Mary Bruce and Nancy have been quite the globe trotters. Honolulu was their meeting ground during the four and a half years Mr. Baker spent in the Navy. Mrs. Baker's father was a regular Army officer who took her into almost every State in the Union and into numerous foreign countries. Mr. Baker is at present a pilot with Eastern Air Lines. All the Cooks and Bakers seem to think the meatless and poultryless days an excellent idea for both home and abroad but hope our own needy will not be forgotten. Bits about 'em Everyone is delighted to see H. C. Witte of 5865 S.W. 31st St. up and about again after a long illness of over three months due to a back injury. Mrs. Martha Teraman has just returned from a long vacation and has been visiting her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Apgar of 5758 S.W. 31st St. Mrs. John B. Campbell, 1701 Country Club Prado, has just returned from three months in Blowing Rock, N. C., and two weeks at her former home, Cincinnati, O.
Post Office Seeks Seasonal Workers Here

The applications will be taken by Miss Nell Galloway, local secretary of the civil service commission. "All persons desiring employment as carriers, clerks, driver-mechanics (motor vehicle services), mail handlers or special delivery messengers should make application," Emerson stated. Special delivery messengers are required to have serviceable automobiles. Employment is available to both male and female veterans and non-veterans.

Cavaliers Meet South Broward At Hollywood
(Continued from Page One) Johnny Noppenberg for tonight's road game. At right guard he expects to start Ed McGree in place of Al Gustinger and at left tackle he replaces John Gazlay with Joe Cornicello. In the backfield the Broward squad will be faced with Billy Veber and Sonny Parrish instead of Dickie Ladd and Tom Pennekamp at the half backs. "These four switches are being made because I consider each of the players on a par with the boys who started previously and I'm giving them a chance to prove it by having them in at the kick-off," was Noppenberg's comment on the shuffle. The Cavalier's will enter the game tonight at full strength, Noppenberg said, but predicted a close ball game against the upstate rivals. "Phoney" Smith has a hard-hitting squad that operates equally as well from the T-formation as from the Notre Dame box formation. Smith, who a few years ago was rated as the best high school coach in Florida, has come up with an attack that has edged Fort Lauderdale and Vero Beach in two starts to date. Jayvees Oppose Lake Worth Ponce de Leon's "B" squad gets a few hours start on the varsity when they take on Lake Worth Friday afternoon. Thirty-three players will comprise the junior varsity squad in their first game of the season.
