LOOKING AT SPORTS HORNED FROGS TO TAKE TO AIR

By DON CUDDY Riviera-Times Sports Editor "If Baylor is the doormat of the Southwestern conference what is the rest of that loop like?" That was the question buzzing around the Orange Bowl two weeks ago and since tonight we'll see more of that wide open spaces brand of football - this game with Texas Christian is as near as we'll get to the answer. 'Bad News' Cianci At It Again Tony Cianci, Miami tackle coach and scout, is back from the Ozarks. He didn't like the trip mostly because he isn't too happy over what showed up in the Arkansas-T.C.U. game Saturday. The Horned Frogs dropped the game, 6-0, but in Cianci's book the Texans were just one muffed pass from winning that one after pushing the Razorbacks all over the field in the second half. It's just like Dutch Meyers, T.C.U. coach says: They're going to pass and pass and pass. On the ground they have about the same attack that got two touchdowns here last year. And, while we edged the Horned Frogs 20-12 on two fine runs by Davey Eldredge, they gave up the passing game when our line bottled up Jim Lucas early in the game. Lucas hasn't been in there for two weeks, but may be ready to start tonight. Without their first-string quarterback, the Frogs completed 14 passes in 29 attempts for 159 yards against Oklahoma - which rates as some kind of airmail special delivery service in any league. And this time with a trio of first-line flingers to spell Lucas ... the Orange Bowl will be filled with 'Cane breaking aerials. Harding Polishing Lopsided 'T' As of Wednesday Jack Harding was scrimmaging his varsity on fast opening plays that came off well enough to show he really means business with the Lopsided T. And there's one important change in the Hurricane backfield array that may not show up for a few games but is something to watch for. Bob Campbell has been shifted from wingback to spell Hal Johnson in the under-the-center role. That gives Harding the kind of varied support for the One Man Gang that was promised from Carl Mosso before the season started. Al Hudson, the sensation of the Orange Bowl classic, returned this week to replace Campbell as the most eligible pass-interceptor on the squad. Run Wasn't Filmed The Villanova Gridiron program featured a lengthy lament about no film record available of Bob Polidor's historic 109-yard run against the Hurricanes last year. It seems that the only camera that was grinding ran out of film before Polidor crossed mid-field and so the author, Mort Berry of the Philadelphia Inquirer, called for a battery of loaded cameras to be on hand for this game in case history repeated itself (which it came close to doing three times - once for our own Hal Johnson who almost duplicated his thriller-diller of the Louisiana State game). 'Bet the Philadelphians have their fingers crossed hoping that the celluloids didn't take in all of last Friday's game. There were at least two questionable penalties called against Miami (one practically gave the Wildcats their touchdown and the other set up that near-miss field goal) aside from the dubious conversion that made the game a standoff. Coach Jack Harding made no indication that he would protest Referee Stanley F. Ebert's decision but was more prejudiced and say that a team that fought as hard and played as well as the Hurricanes to win that game should not have been cheated of that vital point: "Moral Victories" don't register in the record. Some Personal Statistics Special to Hurricane Fans Who Have Favorite Players: Hal Johnson and Bob Bowman (in that order) were the chief ground-gainers for the game and considerable credit for the hard-hitting 'Cane attack is accredited blocking back Ernie Mazejka ... Tony Yovicsin made a spectacular interception and brilliantly shored up his flank defensively ... new tackle Leonard DeLonga prevented two embarrassing scores by hauling down TD-bound Villanova backs from behind ... Art Davies was plenty rugged on defense and will make a smashing line-bucker once he gets over fumbilitis ... Ernie Settembre, Mario DeMarco and Ed Hauck (each of whom came within a few minutes of playing the entire game) are the reasons the Villanova beef-trust didn't roll all over us. Great things can be expected of halfback Al Kasulin and plunger Leo Hauck, given another fortnight of game experience. Al runs hard every attempt, and once Leo ("The Rock") develops his timing on the spinner plays Harding will have another Bob MacDougal plus a fullback who loves to block ... that something that's been missing in the Miami offense. Bob "Whitey" Campbell needs the same kind of experience - twice he committed the almost-fatal sin of letting eligible receivers get behind him for pass completions. Prominent among the Miami delegation in the City of Brotherly Love were five former Hurricanes, three of whom are now playing professional football in the east. Phil Kaplan, one of last year's stellar guards is now a regular with the Long Island Indians ... Jim Vaccaro (with the Wilkes-Barre Barons) and Vincent "Pug" Pickney, of the Boonton-Newark Cardinals, last wore Miami Uniforms with the Orange Bowl champions. Frank Courey and Don Kennedy (who is as good a comedian as he was an end) were also on hand and all were mighty pleased with the way their ex-teammates played against Villanova. Bull Session Notes One factor in Miami's great improvement is definitely that Harding polished many of the rough spots and capitalized on Villanova's end-play faults. The Wildcat flankmen made the mistake of not hugging the side-lines when going down under punts and Johnson was quick to take advantage of their neglect on the 54-yard run-back of Capriotto's punt early in the game. The same pair of ends had the habit of crashing on most of the plays and Bob Bowman reversed them silly. That, friends, everything else being equal out-side of Villanova's slick ball-handling subterfuge, is why we were very much in the ball game all the way. "WE'RE GOING TO PASS AND PASS AND PASS!" says Coach Dutch Meyer of Texas Christian University when asked "What about the Hurricanes?" In previous years Meyer has come up with sensational artists like Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien. And for tonight's second meeting with the Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl he returns with a quartet that may spread Miami's secondary wide. Left to right they are: Leon Joslin, Carl Knox, Lindy Berry and Jim Pecos.

Pratt Plans School for Hospital Aids

A school for volunteer hospital workers will be held at the Pratt Veterans Administration Hospital in Coral Gables on Friday, October 17, at 9:30 a. m. in the theater. Adequate care of the sick requires understanding and cooperation between all those who care for patients, no matter how brief or casual the contacts with these patients may be, VA officials pointed out. To qualify persons of the community for such volunteer work, the Veterans Administration is holding a one-day school for all who are interested. "The school has two purposes. It discovers those who can adapt themselves for hospital work, and it finds the particular job for which the volunteer is best suited. Suitability is determined by interest, previous training, experience, and attitude toward the sick. There must be a sincere desire to understand the point of view of the patient and the objectives of the hospital program; to be continually learning on the job; and to consider one's self a part of a team, all the members of which have the object of getting the patient well," a VA spokesman stated. A "Volunteer Hospital Worker" refers to an individual who renders service in the Veterans Administration Hospital program without compensation and on an approved regular schedule of assignment as distinguished from occasional services rendered by individuals.
