CORAL LAKE NEWS New Arrivals Still Coming Despite High Water Level

By VERA BARNES Riviera-Times Correspondent In spite of high water and flooded conditions, the new people continue to arrive. Most of the new arrivals are pleasant who, up to this time, have been unable to find a place to live. Among the new students are Joseph Vasilik from Asbury Park, N. J., Bill Turner of Palm Beach, Florida, William D. Rooks from Bonifay, Florida and Byron S. Shinn and Franklin Brown of Philadelphia. John K. Beck, a sales service man is back in camp from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Then there's John F. Cockerill, who bought Fred Wilkin's trailer and porch. Sick List We have mostly good news in this department today. Fred Wilkins underwent an operation for the removal of a very hard to find appendix Monday. He was given a spinal anesthesia, and was a not too interested spectator at his own "coming-out" party! Al Jenney reports that his wife Helen is coming along very nicely. Helen has been ill since the fourth of July, and we're all glad to hear that she's doing so well. She has even been allowed to take a short ride with Al on Sundays. Mrs. Plummer has been doing a wonderful job taking care of their baby daughter, Jeannie. Mrs. C. P. Dowling has been ill, but she is doing nicely and will be up and around in a few days. Pat Irwin has been hobbling about as the result of an infected mosquito bite on her right foot. Her husband was the fellow that overslept and missed his call for the flight that crashed in Florida not so long ago. Mrs. C. E. Genese has been ill for about a week with a severe attack of asthma. She is better now, and is up and around. And speaking about bad luck, Mrs. Stoudt has certainly had her share. Their trailer was damaged in the hurricane, and then her husband was taken ill with pneumonia, leaving her the three children to care for. He is much better now and is at home convalescing. Thursday is the day, and Friday there will be some moaning around Coral Lake. The County nurse and Doctor will be out to give Typhoid shots to those that want them. It is voluntary and free, so many of the residents are planning to take them. It's a good idea, and it's better to be safe than sorry! Fish Story Last Sunday morning, early, four of our people went down to Marathon, Florida, at the Seven Mile Bridge for a little pre-season fishing, and never in their wildest dreams did they think they would get what they got! ! ! Here's the tally: One Jewfish, weighing 400 pounds, one Shark, weighing approximately 200 pounds, and about 15 grouper and red Snapper. Now you'll have to admit, that's some fishing. W. L. De Long, Bill Delph, Bill Pendleton and Don DeLong were the Isaac Waltons. Needless to say, the park was well supplied with fish, and just in time for President Truman's new policy on meatless Tuesdays. The Infantry The latest recruit to the Infantry in the Park, is the young Peifer baby. She'll have to join the WACs, being a six pound, six ounce baby girl. She was born at 2:30 in the morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital on October the sixth. Art was really hoping for a boy, who doesn't, but he says he'll keep her. For 17 years Lt. Col Thomas J. Kelly has been military director of the Greater Miami Boys Drum & Bugle corps, and Caesar LaMonaca has been its musical director.

Frog Hollow Correspondent Back on Job

By MARY HICKEY Riviera-Times Correspondent Hello folks! It sure is good to be back in the old routine again-but we're having quite a time getting "on schedule". In fact, we haven't been able to find ANY shecdule so far that allows time for "mama" to eat and sleep-as well as write a news column. And in all the years of our existence we've never encountered anything that gave us the "first-night jitters" the way our small daughter does-so we'll gladly welcome any helpful hints from our Frog Hollow mothers who have "weathered the storm" before. It's been a long time since anything made us feel as good as did all the kind inquiries and visits from our neighbors-and we'll like to say that it made us more certain than ever that this community of ours is "the place" to call home. We gathered from "hubby", who daily brought us the "Hollow" gossip, that the main topics of interest during our absence were the inauguration of house to house mail delivery on those streets not previously served, and the invasion into the neighborhood of some villanous creature known familiarly as "Army worm", whose sole purpose in life was the consumption of the grass we had all labored so hard and long to achieve. We understand that Hal Finchers were the first to cheer the mail delivery, for it meant that at long last they would be rid of the ever-growing line of rural boxes that has adorned their front lawn all summer... and the latest reports on the "war of the worms" is that the tide of battle has been turned with the aid of some arsenic of lead and much diligence on the part of "Mayor" Davies, Mr. Russell, Mr. Buchanan and our own hubby. Mrs. Paul Greenway of S. W. 60th Court is entertaining her sister Mrs. Ralph Jefferson of Jackson, Miss., who arrived recently by plane-this being her first trip to Florida. It is expected she will remain for three weeks and be joined by her husband during that time. Little Judy Vetter of S. W. 60th Avenue, the eight year old daughter of Dr. Carl Vetter was a patient at the Jackson Memorial Hospital where she was admitted las Saturday for an appendectomy-she is now at home and doing nicely. Dr. and Mrs., W. W. Davies had the pleasure of renewing and old acquaintanceship over this past week-end in the person of Dr. George Chittenden of Detroit, Michigan. Birthday parties are quite often the order of the day when a neighborhood such as ours can boast of so many of the "younger set". The latest party giver is Jean Greenway, age five, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Greenway, who celebrates her birthday on October 11 and will have seventeen of her playmates for the usual "ice cream and cake" session on Saturday afternoon.
