'48 Homecoming Fete Will Last A Full Week

A full week's program, jam packed with activity, has been scheduled for the University of Miami's 1948 Homecoming, Duncan Held, executive director, announced today. The program is being sponsored by the Class of 1926, which is now organizing a "Founders Class Club" with members all over the United States. George Glassford has been named general chairman and Mrs. Eileen Pharmer Franklin chairman of woman's activities. Completed plans will be worked out with the full approval of the University officials, Held said. Opening on a Sunday, the tentative program includes luncheons, tours, radio programs, dances, teas, stag parties, bonfires and parades, all to be climaxed by the homecoming game on Saturday and a large ball. Held said that approximately 100 alumni of the Class of '26 are living in the Miami area at the present time and will actively participate in making the plans.

Rev. Roy Gilmour Pavy's sermon at the Coral Gables Congregational Church, 11 o'clock Sunday morning will be "Holding High The Christian Banner." The anthem "Search Me, O God" by Rogers will be sung by Geraldine Rasmussen and the choir. The choir will also sing "God Is My Shepherd" by Dvorak.

Frog Hollow Lots Sold For $5000 During Boom

BY MARY HICKEY In these days of soaring prices, and the old bugaboo "inflation," it's rather gratifying to find out that you have purchased something at a price considerably lower than its cost! At a recent meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Club, Leslie Coombes, local realtor, gave a talk on the history of Coral Gables and our own Central Miami—and imagine our surprise and elation to learn that lots in what is now Frog Hollow once sold at $5000 for a 50-ft. frontage! It really made us feel better about the whole price situation in general... until we went to buy our weekly groceries. Off to Philly We were wishing this week that we could reduce our size so that we would fit comfortably in Dr. George Schmitt's coat pocket. The doctor is leaving this week for a sojourn in our old home town—the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Although there's no doubt that the doctor will enjoy his stay, the main purpose of his visit will be to attend post-graduate courses at the famous old University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his studies, Dr. Schmitt will also attend the Eastern Regional Meeting of the American College of Physicians and the Southern Medical Association and will then return to Frog Hollow in time to be with his family for Thanksgiving. Say "hello" to Billy Penn for us, Dr. Schmitt! We've been watching with a great deal of interest the new houses that have been going up over on 60th Place and the other day decided to investigate. It was a rather rugged ride for the small fry in the buggy, but persistence and "push" finally won and in no time at all we were knocking on the door at 3720 60th Place, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Penney. Mrs. Penney greeted us at the door as her small daughter, Anne Marie, had informed her that "there's a baby coming down the street and there's a lady with it!" The Penneys are really newcomers to Frog Hollow, as they just moved in Nov. 4, a date which they are very superstitious about, as it seems that practically all the important events in their lives have happened on that date—and it also happens to be Mrs. Penney's birthday! Both Mr. and Mrs. Penney (Marie and Harry to their friends) are practically natives of this section, as both have been residents of the Gables since early childhood and both attended Ponce High School. Mr. Penney studied architecture at the University of Florida, while Mrs. Penney is a graduate of the University of Alabama. Mr. Penney's schooling was interrupted by a term in the service as a captain in the Army Engineers, but he returned to his studies after his discharge and is now a practicing architect. Studies Baton Twirling The four-year-old member of the household has already indicated a talent for a somewhat public career and is presently taking lessons in baton twirling from the well-known Bill Allen and your correspondent was slightly envious of her little white boots and shining baton! Penney's talents for planning and color harmony are evident in the interior of their home, and he is already planning on creating a playground for the children in the immediate neighborhood. Mrs. Penney says her home is her hobby, but as a sideline she collects toy pianos. It's a Boy Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Chapman of Old Cutler Road, are announcing the birth of a second son, Ralph Longacre, Oct. 23. Ralph Longacre's older brother is William Edward, two.
