GOLF Country Club — By ANN RANDOLPH
This could certainly, without a doubt, be called tournament week at Granada. What with the Ladies Championship and the men beginning their qualifying on Wednesday. The ladies got off to a fine start on Monday with Mrs. Jimmy Burns winning putts with 24. She had twelve one putt greens an that's mighty wonderful putting in anybody's book. She also won Medalist with 95. Mrs. Burns, Redelsheimer, Nelson, Green and Kirk won their matches on Tuesday, first day of match play. Today we had our luncheon at the Country Club and the prizes were presented. Medalist—Mrs. Jimmy Burns, Championship—Mrs. G. M. Nelson, Championship runner-up—Mrs. William Redelsheimer. First Flight—Mrs. C. D. Kirk and First Flight runner-up—Mrs. Wilber Clark. This tournament ends the 1947 season and play will resume again the first week of the new year, however, quite a few of our members still have another tournament to look forward to in the Greater Miami Women's Golf Association's championship, beginning Monday the 17th at the Miami Country Club. A few showers sent the Saturday golfers scurrying for shelters, but Sunday was a lovely day and 250 tried their luck with wood and iron. Much work is being done at the pro shop. "Umps" has moved his rack from the north side of the building to the south. The partition between the old rack room and the office has been removed, which will enable "Umps" to have more display space as well as a small lounge. Bill Gorman is leading, so far, in the qualifiers in the Country Club of Coral Gables Championship Tournament with a 44-44-88, Clark reported Thursday. Other qualifiers on Wednesday were, Frank Howard—90, Frank Spencer—91, and John F. Erb—98. Twenty have signed up and have until next Tuesday evening to post their qualifying scores. Three's the Limit Five University of Miami backs have been able to score three times in a single game. Eddie Dunn turned the trick twice in 1938, Gene Bogart made it in 1940, Howard Plasman in 1941, Peanuts Donahoo, 1934, and Harry Ghaul in 1945. But that is the closest anyone has come to Bill L'Italien's five TD's against Piedmont in 1934.
TODAY'S SPORTS PARADE Ben Hogan Denies Connection With P.G.A. 'Poison Pen'
United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Nov. 14. (UP)—Bantam Ben Hogan pulled himself up to his full five feet, seven inches today and denied vehemently that he had "anything whatsoever" to do with the poison pen attack on P.G.A. President Ed Dudley or any political aspirations for the Chicago convention next week. Hogan, linked with the Horton Smith-Dick Metz combine which leads the anti-Dudley faction, in a telephone call from Fort Worth, Tex., denied emphatically that he had any political ambitions in the Pro Golfers' association. The great little golfer, who always has been one to play golf and mind his own business, also refuted reports that he resented the recall of Byron Nelson from retirement to play on the Ryder Cup team. Those reports followed the sending of anonymous postcards from El Paso, Tex., and New York attacking Dudley. The cards were mailed to P.G.A. members in all sections of the nation in anticipation of the organization's annual meeting in Chicago, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. "I have absolutely nothing to do with the election of the P.G.A. president and I want nothing to do with it," Hogan said. "Neither do I have any political aspirations whatsoever. These poison pen cards are news to me and I know nothing about who is doing it. He did make a mistake in thinking that the information came from Fred Corcoran, P.G.A. promotion director. It was only last winter that an argument between Metz and Corcoran developed into a one-punch fight which sent Corcoran to the hospital. Corcoran termed it a "sneak punch". Just as it was news to Hogan, our "poison pen" story was news to Corcoran. He isn't the only man who knows who blew the whistle shifts the alignment. Hogan was so upset by the story that he called Corcoran in New York, accused Fred of releasing the information, and threatened: "We'll settle this between us when we meet in Chicago." I would like to save Corcoran another punch on the jaw. Not for any other reason than that he is innocent in this case. And I also advised Hogan to that effect. If Hogan lets his Irish get away from him he will be needlessly damaging one of golf's greatest reputations.
