Pastors Choose Varied Topics For Their Sunday Sermons
Presbyterians Start Evening Services Sunday
Expanding its schedule of church services, the Gables Presbyterian church will begin conducting Sunday evening worship services this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. During these services, which will be held in the Merrick Demonstration school, congregational singing will be emphasized. This Sunday night, Dr. B. M. Larson will speak to the congregation on the topic of "The Kingdom Law of Greatness." "No Great Work Because of Unbelief" will be Dr. Larson's theme at the 11 a.m. worship hour. Nursery care is provided for children of pre-school ages during this service. Beginning at 10:45 a.m., the Church Session will meet to receive members into the fellowship of the church.
Home Director To Speak Sunday
T. M. Johns, superintendent of the Florida Baptist Children's Home, will bring the message at the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday at the University Baptist church. He will discuss the work carried on in behalf of homeless children. Dr. Ladislau Biro, the pastor of the church, will deliver the message at the evening worship service, beginning at 7:45 p.m. Bible school meets at 9:45 a.m. and B.T.U. at 6:30 p.m.
Pavy to Preach On 'Treachery'
Rev. Roy Gilmour Pavy of the Coral Gables Congregational church has chosen as his topic for this Sunday's service at 11 a.m., "Treachery, the Sign of Spiritual Bankruptcy." During the service, the Men's choir and the entire choir will sing the anthem, "Even Me." The choir will also render Bach's Choral "Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light" from the Christmas Oratorio. Under the leadership of Rev. Frank T. Hironx, the church school of religious education will have the following classes Sunday morning: Intermediates, Juniors, and Seniors will meet at 9:30; the Marshall Bible class for adults will meet at 10 a.m.; Beginners, Primary, and Handicraft classes will meet during the 11 a.m. church service.
Dr. Schaaf to Talk At 1st Presbyterian
Warner Hardman, organist, will play Whiting's "The Christ Child," and Stern's "Grand Chorus" during the morning worship service of the First Presbyterian church of Coral Gables this Sunday. Also contributing to the musical portion of the service will be the choir, singing Matthews' "Behold the Days Come," and Marilyn Michel, soprano, who will be heard in "Jesu Bambino" by Yon. Dr. Nevin Schaaf will deliver a message on the subject of "The Undiscouraged God." A nursery for small children and a crafts class for slightly older ones are in session during the morning service. Church school convenes at 9:45 a.m. Members of the Young Adult forum and Westminster Fellowship will meet at the church at 5:45 p.m. and go to the Central Presbyterian church where they will be guests of the youth groups of that church for supper and the showing of moving pictures.
Church to Show 'The Way of Peace'
Rev. C. J. Sutoris will conduct the divine worship service of the St. James Lutheran church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. His message will be "It Is Close to Us-which is the Kingdom of God." Beginning at 7 p.m., the Luther League will meet to rehearse their Christmas play. A special program will be presented at the church beginning at 8 p.m. A sound-color motion picture entitled; "The Way of Peace," will be shown to the public. This film, which has been judged 1947's most unusual religious film production, is one of the first of significance to be made with three dimensional puppet puppets and miniature sets. Narrated by Lew Ayers, the film was produced by East-West Studios.
Grove Baptists Conclude Air Series
Beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, the Coconut Grove Baptist church will broadcast its fourth and last morning worship service over radio station WBAY. Rev. George McNeil Ray will use as his subject, "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" Under the direction of William Folwell, and accompanied by Mrs. F. S. Youngfelt, the choir will render an anthem in keeping with the pre-Christmas season. At the evening worship service, which begins at 7:30 p.m., the minister will speak on the subject: "The Man of the Years."
First Christian Plans Woman's Day Service Sunday
In recognition of the missionary work which has been administered and promoted primarily through the woman's organization in the church, Woman's day will be observed this Sunday at the 10:45 morning worship service of the First Christian church of Coral Gables. Rev. John Messer will speak on "We Who Are Debtors." Under the direction of Mrs. Rubie J. Brain, an arrangement of the hymn "O Zion Haste" by Walch will be given by the choir. Offering graded classes for all ages, the Church School convenes at 9:30 a.m. In the afternoon, beginning at 5 o'clock, the Intermediate Fellowship meets for recreation, study, and fellowship. For the same purposes, the Youth Fellowship meets at 6 p.m. The 8 p.m. worship service this Sunday will be conducted by the Laymen's League of the church.
'Portrait of Steward' Is Sermon Topic
"Portrait of a Steward" is the subject of the sermon to be heard at the Riviera Presbyterian church of South Miami this Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. A nursery for tiny tots is conducted during the morning worship hour. Riviera's church school opens at 9:30 a.m., with graded classes for all ages. Youth Fellowship and Pioneer young people's groups meet at 6 p.m. Joining forces with the South Miami Baptist and Methodist churches, the Riviera church members will present a temperance drama, "The Panstrel," beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Coco Plum Woman's Club. The program is open to the public.
Church to Celebrate Holy Communion
Holy Communion will be celebrated during the 11 a.m. worship hour of the Coral Gables First Methodist church this Sunday. Rev. J. H. Daniel will deliver a short sermon entitled "Rejoicing Over Trials." The musical portion of the program will consist of Oley Speaks' anthem, "Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled," and a male quartet singing "Steal Away To Jesus." Members of the quartet are Oren Coates, Earl Long, Tom Winston, and Clyde Neill.
Sparling to Discuss 'The Best Seller'
Holy Communion will be celebrated this Sunday, the second Sunday in Advent, at 8 a.m. and at 11 a.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal church, 1121 Avenue Andalusia. During the 11 a.m. service the rector, Dr. Christopher Sparling, will deliver a sermon entitled "The Best Seller." The Church school will meet at 9:30 a.m., and at 10 a.m. the Adult class, conducted by Dr. William Dismukes, will meet.
S. Miami Methodists To Witness Play
Sunday services of the First Methodist church of South Miami begin with Sunday School classes for all ages at 9:45 a.m. At this time two adult classes, the Good Fellowship class, led by Dr. Ray-mond Van Dusen, and the Friendship class, led by Clayton Acker, meet. "The Hope of All the Years" is the title of the Rev. Carroll Varner's message to be delivered during the morning worship service which begins at 10:50 o'clock. The Methodist Youth Fellowship meets at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. members of the church will unite with members of the South Miami Baptist and Presbyterian churches at the Riviera Presbyterian church for the presentation of the "Panstrel," a temperance drama.

Legion to Join Pearl Harbor Rite
American Legion Post 31 of South Miami will participate in a special Pearl Harbor program to be presented at the South Miami Baptist Church Sunday morning at 11 a.m. George C. Gibbons, commander of the post, will read the scriptures. Other Legionnaires will serve as ushers and lead in prayer. All ex-servicemen of the church are requested to wear their uniforms. The topic of Rev. Frank C. Morgan's sermon for this service will be "They Watched Him Die."
Fritsch to Talk On 'Say So' Sunday
"Say So" is the topic of the message to be delivered by the Rev. Harvey Fritsch at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Country Club Christian church, 1009 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. During this service the choir will sing Gabriel's "Awakening Chorus." For the offertory, Charlotte Hicks will sing "The Lord Is My Shepherd" by Malotte. All young people are invited to attend the Christian Endeavor meeting at 6:45 p.m., during which time the film, "Music In America" will be shown.

First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Coral Gables is opposite City Hall Park. Morning service, 11 a.m. Evening service, 8 p.m. Sunday school, 11 a.m. Wednesday evening 8 o'clock. "God the Only Cause and Creator" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, December 7. The Golden Text is: "Every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God" (Hebrews 3:4). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created" (Revelation 4:11). The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "CREATOR. Spirit; Mind; intelligence; the animating divine Principle of all that is real and good; self-existent Life, Truth, and Love; that which is perfect and eternal; the opposite of matter and evil, which have no Principle; God, who made all that was made and could not create an atom or an element the opposite of Himself" (883:20).
