SPORTS CORAL GABLES SCORE CARD

Bowl Committee Embarrassed By Kansas Coach's Statement By DON CUDDY Seems the Orange Bowl Committee were caught napping by George Sauer's statement to the United Press yesterday that the way the Kansas Jayhawks win ball games is to hold the other team down long enough to win only by as many points as necessary. Now . . . that's the only sensible thing for a coach to say in spite of the annual build-up that the teams selected are strictly offensive minded. Who is kidding who?? Kansas Has Got to Be Fast From the listed weights of the Kansas players, it's hardly possible that they are anything but speed demons. Georgia Tech is in the same position because each squad has a height average of six-feet to go with the 187-pound weight average. Three of the Jayhawk's forward wall are converted backfield men-Center Dick Monroe, guard Don Fambrough and tackle Don Ettinger. Ettinger is the heaviest lineman on the squad at 204, which hardly compares with some of the hefties seen in action on the Orange Bowl turf during the regular season. Our Own Bowl Game The sandlot football championship of the Southwest section will be at stake tomorrow morning when the Coral Gables Rockets meet the Shenandoah Scorpions in a game at the Douglas Road Coliseum. It's one of those "tradition affairs" that is four years old. Last time out the Scorpions aced our locals, 30-29 in an combined "overtime and sudden death" period .. but the Gables lads are right out to make up for the huffonery-they're briging the time-keeper. Riddle Cagers In First Test Tonight Although Leo Boles' Riddle College cagers have averaged something over 97 points in their first two games, he admits that the season really opens for the team when it moves in on Florida Southern College at Lakeland for a two-game stay tonight. The next eight games are all against four-year schools and will make or break the school's first basketball team. Leo doesn't like road trips-especially the first of the season . . . . That's some thing to worry about and the fact that the Dreadnoughts also have nine lettermen on the squad is another. Any coach who'se worth his salt can do wonders with a team in a year . . . and the evidence is that the Lakelanders are redhot and polished enough to effectively upa floating zone defense, a tricky strategy that most coaches have to have plenty of confidence in their team to employ. The Riddlers return Sunday, but won't have another home game until the 23rd, when they meet Tampa at the Edison High school gymnasium. Wofford College, Furman and Erskine, on tap for Dec. 15, 16 and 18, will be more than just scrimmages goes as the club makes a swing up through South Carolina.

Registered Pistol Matches Slated for Palmetto Range Sunday

Over 50 target-shooting enthusiasts are expected to participate in the Florida East Coast Registered Class C match at the Palmetto Pistol and Rifle Club all day Sunday, A. T. Kelly, secretary of the league, said today. Added to the entries are 25 delegates from the Cuban rifle associations. This is the first step in the exchange program of the two international leagues. The visits were discontinued before the war, the last international match being held in Cuba in 1939. The Cuban competitors, several with their wives, are due to arrive here this afternoon and will stay at the Antilla Hotel until Tuesday. A total of 104 prizes will be awarded in the 14-match meet, one to the winner of each event, one to the foreign entry with the highest score, and one each to the four classes of competition. Registered matches, according to Kelly, are the only opportunity rifle and pistol enthusiasts have of officially netting a world's record. All scores will be filed with the National Rifle Association in Washington for confirmation.

Nine Seniors In Starting Lineup

When nine seniors start their last football game for Ponce de Leon High school's Cavaliers tonight at the Orange Bowl, Coach John Noppenberg promises that they will not only knock the West Palm Beach Gulfstream Conference pacemakers out of first place before the season's wind-up is over, but that they'll also put on a demonstration of "the latest thing in football" for the dubious benefit of the visitors and the delight of the spectators. That's a lot of promise to make for a club that's been good for only three wins in nine trips to the post-especially against the up-staters who have cleaned up just about everything in their class-but the old Noppenberg super-confidence that was dampened somewhat by one-touchdown (or less) losses through the middle of the season has returned. Making their final bid for scholastic glory tonight will be cocaptains Tom Fryer and Tom Gibson, both continuous for all-city honors, and Bill Westcott and Bob Wood, tackle John Gaslay, guard Ed McGee, halfbacks Malcolm Johnson and Tom Pennekamp and fullback Billy Nolan. Only two starters in tonight's game will be around for next season, tackle Jim Overstreet, who won his spurs in Ponce's 6-0 win over Fort Lauderdale Thanksgiving night, and quarterback Sonny Parrish. The September hurricane blew West Palm Beach-from the opening game on the Cavalier's schedule to the finale. Whatever might have happened, had the game been played as originally scheduled-or what might happen if Noppenberg's fireworks materialize tonight . . . the Wildcats, under the double-wing formation of Red Whittington, have only a 7-7 tie with Tech High school to mar their record.

Eleven Entered In Riviera Derby Event

The Riviera Country Club Derby headlines the weekend golf activities in Coral Gables tomorrow, and that will be followed by another special event at the Blue Rond links Sunday, the Father and Sons tournament, in which about a dozen combinations are expected to compete. Walter Humkey, recent winner of the Class C tournament, is high-handicap entry in the derby carrying 19 strokes into the field of eleven. Other starters, with handicaps in parenthesis are: Dr. Charles Burbacher (8), Pat Ciserano (11), Herbert Jones (2), Henry Russell (1), Tom Shelley (4), John Sullivan (14), George Walker (12), Dr. Hilliard Willis (11), Dr. A. V. Harrison (8), Jack Kehow (14).

St. Mary's Wins Cage Loop Debut

St. Mary's made their first start in the Youth Center Municipal League count with a 25-21 victory over Tiny's Snack Shop Thursday night on the Riddle College Colonade Building Court. In the second game, the Fast-breaking Elks Club, titleholder in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the past four years in a row, much accuracy for Carl's Li-qours, dumping them 27-31 to even up their record at one win against one loss. It was the second defeat for Carl's. The fast-breaking Elks Club, led by Bill Boesch with 12 points, ran up the highest victory margin in their topsy-turvy 48-18 basting of the Jaycees to close out the evening. Next league games are scheduled for 7 o'clock Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Peak Crowd Seen for Negro Classic

Florida A & M College of Tallahassee and Hampton (Virginia) Institute, two of the nation's top rank negro college football teams, will meet at Orange Bowl stadium tomorrow night in the Fifteenth Orange Blossom Classic. Since moving of game time from 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon to 8:15 o'clock at night, ticket sales have been booming and a record crowd is predicted for the game. Special seating arrangements in the Orange Bowl will be made for Saturday night's contest with white patrons in the south stands and negro football fans on the opposite side of the field. There will be no end zone tickets sold. Florida A & M and Hampton enter Saturday night's game ranked as third and fourth respectively in the negro college "Top Ten," according to the Pittsburgh Courier, a leading Negro newspaper. The Florida Rattlers, winners of eight out of nine starts this fall, are only a few percentage points from the top rung and are hoping for a decisive win over Hampton which would give them a good claim to their fourth national championship. Florida held this honor in 1938, 1939 and 1942, and has been titleholder in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the past four years in a row.

SPORTS PARADE By Oscar Fraley UP Sports Writer

NEW YORK, Dec. 5, (UP) — Horance Horoscope ankled through the astral advance dope today and reported convincingly that Tarus the Bull will gore Aquarius, the ancient water bearer, at Madison Square Garden tonight. If you are still there, that means old Joe Louis will belt the bejabbers out of Jersey Joe Walcott. The time will be about 10:19 p.m. EST, or roughly the fifth round. Anybody can say that so-and-so will win and so-and-so will lose. But we get a slightly aesthetic quality in the report with a jet job perusal of what the stars have (Please Turn to Page Eight)

Four More Swim Stars Added to Aqua Follies Cast

Four more of the country's top-ranking swimmers and divers including Olympic swim champion Peter Fick were added today to the cast of the Orange Bowl Festival Aqua Follies, the water-carnival scheduled for the Venetian Pool Dec. 29 and 30. Pete Desjardin, who will produce the festival's first annual water show, announced the signing of Fick, who won the world's 100-meter swimming championship at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, as well as divers Sam Howard, Clayton Mains and Charley Diehl this morning. Howard, who once landed in Robert Ripley's Believe It or Not on the strength of his spectacular springboard acrobatics, is noted for numerous motion picture shorts on diving. Both Howard and Mains, a comedy diver, performed in the Billy Rose World's Fair Aquacade. 'Heavyweight Diving Champ' Diehl, a 235-pound former professional football player for the Cleveland Rams, starred for several years in the annual Minneapolis Water Carnival, the Aquatennial, and has been given the unofficial title of "the world's heavyweight diving champion." Previously Desjardin had announced the signing of former Olympic diving champion Earl Clark and another Aquacade comedian, Frank Snary, for the Orange Bowl exhibition. The Aquafollies will combine the swimming and diving show with the coronation of the Orange Bowl Queen, and elaborate ceremonies involving several water ballet numbers and 48 girl swimmers, serving as the queen's heralds.
