Sox Announces Candidacy for County Sheriff

The name of John Kiegler Sox, the 34-year-old nephew of a former Coral Gables chief of police, was presented today as a candidate for Dade County sheriff. The formal announcement of the Sox candidacy was made by Col. Joseph Ryan Byerly, who heads the group of local citizens backing Sox for sheriff. As Sox threw his hat in the ring, a three-way race for the office loomed between incumbent James Sullivan, Ed Deering and Sox. The candidate is a nephew of former Gables police head Earl Sox. Attended U. of M. Sox is a graduate of Columbia, S. C., high school, Porter Military Academy and attended the University of Miami. He served as a Dade County deputy sheriff from 1937 to 1942 when he entered the U. S. Army as a private. He worked his way up through the ranks to become a captain and saw duty in both the European and Pacific theaters. He was a specialist in the field of radar and has been awarded three Bronze Stars. Sox lived in Coral Gables until he recently purchased a home at 3021 SW 14th Street and is married to a Coral Gables girl. They have one daughter. Col. Byerly said his years of service in the sheriff's office, his impressive war record and his youth make him a formidable candidate in the primaries next June. JOHN KIEGLER SOX
