TWO LEADING ENTRIES in the third annual Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce Horse Show, Mrs. Hillary Pyatt, left, and Mrs. John Gazley, jr., consider the win possibilities of Kitty Carlisle, and Holiday.

NINE ENTRIES FILED Thirty Classes Open in $2,500 Jaycee Horse Show

Horsemen throughout Florida were invited today to compete for the $2500 in prizes, trophies, and ribbons, in the third Coral Gables Jaycee horse show, January 31 and February 1 at the Coral Gables Riding Academy. Events will include competition in 30 classes in what Publicity Chairman Phil H. Campbell has described as, "The biggest show of the season in all of South Florida." Proceeds from the show, which is sanctioned by the Florida Horse Show Association, will go to selected charities supported by the local Junior Chamber of Commerce. Owners of show horses desiring to enter this showing were advised to contact Sam Elcook, 2515 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, as soon as possible. Entries already received for the competition include: Joanne Weintraub's "Royal Fashion"; Mrs. Hilray Pyeatt's "Kitty Karlyle"; John P. Gazlay's "Kemal Pasha" (an imported Arabian); Mrs. Adele Goddard's "Dark Cloud"; Mrs. Fannie Hoskin's "Buckner LaGrange"; Roy Fleeman Jr.'s "Mountain Aristocrat"; Miss Pat Wood's "Chief of Green Acres"; Miss Joan White's "Dixie Echo" and Mike and Joanne Weintraub's "Man About Town." Campbell called special attention to the Jaycee Challenge Trophies which are being offered again this year for three and five gaited horses respectively. Five gaited trophy was won last showing by John P. Gazley, Jr., on Summer Storm. Three gaited trophy won by Miss Patty McGill, on Peavine Amberdare. New Kansas Scoring High The Orange Bowl Jayhawkers set a new single game scoring high for Kansas football teams this Fall when they ran up an 86-6 score on South Dakota State. Allen Wins A.A.U. Boxing Heavy Crown

Don Allen, free-swinging Coral Gables Youth Center fighter, decisioned Malcom Tait of the Miami Boys Club to garner the open-class heavyweight boxing championship of the South Florida A.A.U., at the Coliseum Thursday night. Dick Jones, only other Gables standard-bearer to reach the finals, unsuccessfully challenged light heavyweight champ Billy Norwood of the Downtown Boys Club, going out by a K.O. in 1:52 of the second round. Allen, who last year won the light-heavy tiara, used his sharper punching talent to good advantage to batter his opponent over the route. Tait got in a few damaging blows by counter-punching, but couldn't control Allen's pounding left hooks to the head and body. Both boys tired early in the second heat, but Allen, although out of shape for boxing, finished much stronger. Jones Gives Way to Body Attack Jones, who went into the finals after just finishing a football campaign for Tech High school, feinted and counter-punched his way to a slight lead in the first round. Norwood, however, caught him with a damaging series of body blows early in the next round which drove Allen into the ropes. Hurt by Norwood's savage body attack, Allen buckled and took the full count. Officials of the A.A.U. selected Skippy Youham as the most promising fighter in the tournament, and also cited Steve Stone, who lost in the earlier rounds of the tournament after suffering a cut eye, with the "hard-luck" consolation prize.

EAL Bumped By Tiny's

Eastern Air Lines was nuged none too gently from a tie for first place in the Youth Center Municipal Basketball League by once-beaten Tiny's Snack Shop, 42-19, at the Riddle College gymnasium, Thursday night. The Elks moved into exclusive ownership of the league lead in the second game of the evening with an easy 46-34 win over St. Mary's, and Friendly Bar picked up its second victory by a narrow 20-16 edge over Tommy Hands. COLISEUM CAGE DEBUT TONIGHT

FOUR UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI basketball veterans and one ambitious freshman will make up the smarting Hurricane team that will open their season and Coliseum cage programs. Left to right, they are: Capt. Tony Yovicsin, Forward Abe Friedman, Guard Jerry Weinstein, high-scoring Forward Bob "Whitey" Campbell, and Yearling Center Ralph Fieler.

Four Vets In U-M Cage Opener

The Coral Gables Coliseum will be the scene of a University of Miami basketball game for the first time Friday night when Coach Hart Morris' Hurricanes launch their 1947-48 program with a two game series against the University of Tampa. The varsity games Friday and Saturday night start at 8:30 p. m. with the freshmen playing a preliminary each night, meeting the Y.M.C.A. Triangles Friday and the Y.M.H.A. Friday. Farewell to 'Gymless Wonders' Shifting of University basketball games to the Coliseum after several years of nightly hopping from one high school gymnasium to another marks a big step forward in Hurricane basketball. Coach Morris, retaining the key veterans from a 1946-47 team which won 20 of 27 games, has booked University of Pittsburgh in the Coliseum Dec. 26 and the University of Pennsylvania Jan. 2. If these two games and the Florida series of Dec. 19 and 20 draws crowds to warrant it, the University of Miami will schedule more "name teams" for future dates. The Tampa Spartans, who bowed four times to Miami last year, have stepped up their attack considerably this year and, in winning two of their first three games, have averaged 50 points per game, enough to make them troublesome to any foe. They downed Edison Junior college 58-37, lost to Florida in Gainesville 70-46 and then downed College of Charleston 46-42. The four point margin over Charleston was the same Miami registered over that team in the S.I.A.A. tournament last spring.
