Home Site Will Become Parking Lot
A plan to convert a piece of residential property near South Dixie Hwy. to a parking lot to serve proposed commercial buildings was approved 4-1 by the Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday. Only Commissioner Joe Murphy voted against J. Allen Brown's plan. Brown, a prominent real estate developer, is the owner of the controversial land located on the north side of Menendez, northeast of Rosario. Special Use The move had been unanimously approved previously by the Zoning Board, which recommended that special use of the property be granted. Nineteen objections were received, but the city ruled that 13 of them were from residents who lived more than 1300 feet from the proposed parking lot site and were not to be considered. A public hearing on the proposal was held on Sept. 26. No change in zoning was entailed by the Commission's action. Brown will be allowed to use the area for parking only and may not build anything other than a single-family residence on the property, if he decides to build later. Brown, in making the request, pointed out that his plan was in keeping with the city's off street parking policy.
3 Exhibits On Display At Art Gallery
The Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery at the University of Miami is now showing three widely differing exhibitions. They will be on display until Oct. 30. "Twenty American Paintings," circulated by International Business Machines, Inc., spans about 100 years in American art. Included are works by Darrel Austin, Thomas Cole, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington. More than 20 of the famous Miserere prints by the French modernist Georges Rouault are on display. The religious artist's prints are from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Levin of Miami Beach. Displayed with the prints is a Rouault painting titled "The Three Judges," on loan from Richard L. Kamen of Chicago. "Photographic Statements in Non-space" is an exhibit of impressionistic photographs by Leo Mindlin, photographer and editor of the Jewish Floridian newspaper.

A CARNIVAL MEANS WORK and that's where the parents take over when the pounding of hammers punctuated the usually quiet atmosphere at Sunset Elementary School, 2-8 p.m. Oct. 25-26. The fathers, in preparation for the Oct. 27 carnival, built the booths. Discussing plans are, left to right, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Coon and four-year-old daughter, Debbie, 6501 SW 58th Ave., and Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Vickers, 420 Tivoli Ave. Mrs. Coon and Mrs. Vickers are carnival chairman and PTA president, respectively.
HAVING A BALL are these boys as they toss a football around while thinking of the Oct. 27 carnival at Sunset Elementary School. And they'd like to let you know that you can have a ball if you come to the event. There'll be plenty of food and games and the public is welcome. In the foreground garbed as a clown, and she'll really be clowning around from 2-9 p.m. at the carnival, is Martha Ann Vickers, 420 Tivoli Ave. Having a ball, left to right, are Peyton Vickers, her brother, Craig Coon, 6501 SW 58th Ave., and Billy Plunkett, 750 Davis Rd.
