Gables High Notes Queen Judy Crowned In Homecoming Event
By LESLIE GROSS Excitement filled the air at the University of Miami Student Union. Students were tense, awaiting the announcement of Homecoming Queen and Court. David Callahan dispelled the air of anticipation with the naming of the court: Becky Jones, Cheryl Speck, Kaaren Johns and Londa Hill. Homecoming Queen was Judy Hasencamp. Thespians, drama honor society, this year as in years past, will hold its toy drive. Gables students will donate toys to try to brighten up the Christmas of less fortunate children. Topping off the gala Homecoming festivities was the Lettermen's Sweetheart Dance on Friday, Nov. 25. Sweetheart and sponsors were announced. On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Key Club held its annual dance. This year's was entitled "Showboat." Junior Class King and Queen were announced. They are Robbi Hasencamp and Bebe Parker, respectively. Gables Junior Red Cross collected $133 in its annual drive. The money will go to the Dade County Red Cross chapter. Key Club Formal Key Club will hold its annual formal on Dec. 10 at the McAllister Hotel in downtown Miami. Sweetheart and sponsors will be presented at the dance. Key Club members from Miami High will be invited this year as in the past. GAA, Girls' Athletic Association, held its annual slumber party at the home of Mimi Weiner. Eight new members were initiated. They are Roberta Appell, Maggie Balbujuk, Carol Conklin, Carol King, Sonya Luis, Judy McMillan, Peggy Phillips and Judy Prettyman. Gables High's Mrs. Herberta Leonardy, noted psychology teacher, has recently written a book on parliamentary procedure which has been translated into Braille for distribution in the State of Florida. On learning of the accomplishment, the Library of Congress sought Mrs. Leonardy, well-known authority on parliamentary procedure, to submit her book for publication. Two copies, one in Braille, were made. The one in Braille will be sent to the Lighthouse For the Blind in Miami and to the Tampa Center for the Blind. Honoraries Tap Members Pen and Sable, Gables art honorary, recently tapped 30 new members. They are: Eduardo Aizcorbe, Kathy Baskin, Roberta Blen, Becky Bobbit, Carol Chesney, Carol Cole, Marshall Connally, Elaine Constantine, Laurie Crawley, Nicki Finger, Nancy Finsten, Carol Flowers, Gail George, Timmie Harrington, Lori Leavy, Julie Neimy, Cappy Page, Judy Paltridge, Rexine Pippinger, Pat Radin, Sharon Richards, Susan Russell, Laney Schwartz, Lucienne Stark, Buddy Walters, Mimi Weiner, Pamela Weaver, Hugh Wilson, Jeff Willard and Ann Wylie. The initiation banquet was held Nov. 16 at the La Casita Tea Room in Coconut Grove. Modern Music Masters tapped new members.
Charged With Drunk Driving
A Coral Gables woman was charged with drunk and careless driving early Nov. 20 when her car went off the road on LeJeune Rd. 300 fet south of South Dixie Hwy. and struck a clump of trees. Mary Jane Parks, 44, of 600 Santander, according to Gables Officer Harold S. Herrington, was southbound on LeJeune Rd. shortly before 1 a.m. when the accident occurred. Herrington said that the woman, apparently unhurt in the accident, ran off the left side of the road before striking the trees. She told police that she attempted to avoid hitting another car. Herrington estimated damage to the car at $300.
Woman Is Injured In Fall At Cafeteria
Virginia Hillis, 42, of 501 Valencia, suffered injuries of the right leg and back in a fall at Polly Davis Cafeteria Sunday shortly after 4:30 p.m. She was given emergency treatment by Firemen I. T. Williams and L. L. Lanway at the scene and taken to Mercy Hospital for further treatment.
