Palmetto High School was recommended for accredition by a committee from the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges after a three day evaluation period from Nov. 14 to 16. The 2-year-old school has been preparing for the evaluation since it first opened its doors in 1958. A final report of findings, both weak and strong, were presented by the visiting committee at Nov. 16 in the auditorium. The visiting committee, headed by Doctor Harris W. Dean, chairman, delivered their report concerning the main areas of the school, consisting of school staff and administration, school plant, pupil activities, library, guidance, and program of studies. All school functions were praised, but a great deal of improvement, necessary as well as desired, was noted. An additional 20 acres of land south of the school was recommended to be purchased to expand the athletic facilities. The expenditure of more money for need to purchase books for the school library so that it will meet the highest current standards. The principal, assistant principals, registrar, plus other members of the office staff, were highly commended for the efficiency with which their administrative duties are performed. Student activities were noted as very good, having high appeal to the students and being centered around the student body. The excellent function of the Student Council as well as the student homeroom programs was also noticed by the committee. School publications were also praised. The three days of evaluation consisted of interviews with students, teachers, and the administration. All subject areas were evaluated.
