Southwest High Slates Senior Sermon

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Baccalaureate services for 670 Southwest High School seniors will be held Sunday in the auditorium. "Finding Your Niche in Life" will be discussed by the Rev. Dr. Frank Mathes, Granada Presbyterian minister. Assisting with the program will be Rev. Larry Whitley, University Christian Church, and Rev. John J. Buell, Flag-ami Baptist Church. Senior William Griffith will give the call to worship. The program is planned by Joseph Ward and Miss Cecile Roussell. SENIOR GIFTS The '61 seniors plan to leave three lasting gifts to the school. First is a satin appliqued emblem of the school seal which will be applied to the curtain in the auditorium. Second is an indoor marquee which will announce the school's activities. Third will be a skeletal school seal placed on the brick directory on the east campus. The senior class will gather for one last time previous to graduation Friday on Class Night, in the cafeteria. At this predominately musical program, the senior class's will, prophecy and class song will be presented. John Self, chairman, was assisted by Laura Henry, Mary McNery, Marsha Shackelford and Jim Dodds in writing the prophecy. Gary Glick and Harriet Charnin collaborated on the class song. The will was prepared by Bernice Galinis, chairman, Mary Lou Hoopes, Nicki Steadman, Anita Sneed and Vicki Fratus. Four leaders were elected by the Student Council as top officers for next year. Russell Bizette, new president, has been council representative in ninth and tenth grades, treasurer last year and attended the Florida State Student Council meeting in Tallahassee. Carol Lindstrom, secretary, has held a long list of top positions. She was president of the sophomore board, and in West Miami Junior High was president of Debs, activity chairman of the council, and won the D.A.R. award for excellence in history. Julie Heisser, vice president, was Homecoming princess, Aquila princess, and princess of the sophomore class. She is third vice president of the PTSA and was recently elected co-captain of varsity cheerleaders. Bill Esty, treasurer, was active in council work in junior high, president of his home-room, and participated in Red Cross, basketball and drama.

Dewey Rykard Ends Training

KEESLER AFB, Miss. — Airman Third Class Dewey L. Rykard, son of Mr. & Mrs. G. E. Rykard of 6020 S.W. 8th St., Miami, recently graduated from the 20-week Air Traffic Control Operator course. At Hunter AFB, Georgia, he will control airport traffic, air approach and air route traffic.
