TIMES By Robert S. Hurwitz A DAMP FLOP A Review
A DAMP FLOP Hundreds of viewers were lured to Vizcaya last Sunday to see the Third Annual Artists Day Clothesline Sale sponsored by the Metro-Dade Recreation Department. Too bad only a handful of absolute amateurs greeted them. The show was a flop and only the damp day kept more people home and saved from disappointment. If this was Metro's bid to do something about saving Vizcaya, then forget it. Publicity lured people ready to buy and see art by artists. Instead, they saw sketches by the untrained, unproved, and uninspired. The garden opened at 12 noon, by 12:30 every work worth seeing was sold, that left four and one half hours of nothing to see but the gardens. Most pencil, charcoal, and water color sketches were priced around $1, $1.50, $2.00 - even some marked down from $3 to $1. This should give you some idea about what the artists thought about themselves. There were a few craftsmen around. They sold their work quickly and that was their recognition. When I say a few I mean two or three. If this Metro evil is perpetuated on us again under the guise of art you can be sure another petition will be in circulation soon. People were lured from Key West to Palm Beach to be our guests at Vizcaya ... they won't come back. The Recreation Division added insult to injury by charging admission. Gee, imagine, now I've got a gripe about Metro. The show was a severe kick in the easel to all people seriously interested enough to attend despite the bad weather. It was a nightmare to our town's good artists. Will someone in Metro please give Vizcaya and its functions some creative thinking? Vizcaya can become a shiny star in our art heavens and cultural atmosphere. Set up a committee of people who love and understand art to administer first aid to a wounded artery in our Metro System. In the name of fair play, Mr. Metro, please make sure this Vizcaya mess gets some of your personal attention. Miami culture needs your help.

west? Yes, the crime is there. Only we hear little about it in either of the dailies or other periodicals. Metro police investigators recognize it. And they're keeping close tabs on it. One thing lacking in the southwest is a municipal police force to continually cruise about keeping an eye out for the crime element. There are enough Metro motormen. But, like Coral Gables and South Miami, the southwest needs the prowl car to check business houses after dark, answer police calls on a moment's notice and break up juvenile gangs which are beginning to congregate at several area hangouts. Police are a deterrent to crime as well as a force against crime. Already several breeding areas have risen that should be watched constantly by police. But in the Southwest we have only Metro police who must dash from location to location checking on crimes that already have been committed. When do Metro police have time to prowl, check and investigate? *** KNOW WHAT DADE'S three leading preventable diseases are? Answer - TB, syphilis and tetanus, in that order. The Public Health Service is doing much of the work in combating these diseases with the able assistance of one of the area's leading civic clubs - the South Miami Jaycees. The Jaycees are conducting a program of immunizing less fortunate South Dade children against tetanus. On May 6 they immunized about 50 children in Coconut Grove. On May 13, also in Coconut Grove, they gave shots to about 120. On May 23 and 27 the Jaycees were giving shots at Richmond Heights Negro development. And the fight goes on.
