Would You Trade a Stamp For a Friend? Here's How

Save stamps and make international friends. A Gableite, Mrs. Palmer H. Craig, has volunteered to process postage stamps to be sent to India. Interested clubs and individuals are asked to contact her at 737 Malaga Ave., HI 3-3754. She and Dr. Craig, a consulting electronics engineer, spent two years in India in the late '50's when he was doing Point IV work for the U.S. government. They recently sent a friend at Bangalore, India, the first day cover of a U.S. stamp commemorating Ghandi, the late Indian spiritual leader. Here is the answer the Craigs got from Dr. Joseph Horne, the cultural officer in charge of the United States Information Service library there: "There has been a series of astonishing chain reactions to the issuance of these stamps. "Our Indo-American Association has had a flourishing stamp club, something which, to my knowledge has not existed in Bangalore before. We can use stamps in the teaching of American history and in many other ways. "There is one serious problem, however. We haven't enough of them. Can you help us? "If a ladies club, or church group, could be induced to save their commemoratives and higher values, there are so many things we can do with them here." Mrs. Craig said she will be glad to process and mail the stamps. Any type or denomination will do. Those shown are the special issue honoring Ghandi. Bangalore, called the garden spot of India, is in the Southern part of the country and has 11⁄2 million population. There are less than 100 Americans living there, Mrs. Craig reports.
