Beth Am Registering Membership for '61-62

Temple Beth Am 5950 N. Kendall Dr., announces registration for membership for its new fiscal year starting July 1. Beth Am, a Community Reform congregation affiliated with the Union of American Hebrew Congregation, has the second largest religious school in South Florida and offers both religious school and Hebrew School for the children. Adult education, youth program, sisterhood, brotherhood, nursery school and other special groups are offered to the congregation. Rabbi Herbert M. Baumgard is spiritual leader of the temple. Cantor is Rev. Charles Sheldon Kodner. For information call Temple office MO 6-2536. South Miami Council, already bitter against Metro and the county's Traffic and Engineering and Transportation Dept., became riled again at a Council meeting last week because the county took one of the city's traffic lights. City Manager C. B. Petry told Council that some workers for the county's Traffic Engineering and Transportation Department came into the city Tuesday afternoon, removed a traffic light at SW 64th Street and 59th Place and left the city before a police car could be called to the intersection to retrieve the light. "But we'll get the light back or know the reason why," Petry told the Council. Although Metro has taken over the city's traffic and transportation problems, the city nonetheless owns all its traffic lights which are listed on the city's books as fixed assets. Cost of the light is about $600. The city, according to Mayor Paul U. Tevis, also has the authority to install traffic signals on city streets other than county-maintained streets through the city. The location where the street light was removed was in the city's Negro section where many accidents occurred before the erection of a traffic light. The city has had other arguments with the Metro Traffic Engineering and Transportation Department, mostly over the movement of traffic on South Dixie Highway. Metro requested from the city and was promptly turned down on a proposal to take all parking off South Dixie Highway through the city to allow for three lanes of traffic on South Dixie Highway. In another instance, the county changed the times on a traffic signal at South Dixie Highway and 62nd Ave. to allow more time for South Dixie highway traffic and less time for 62nd Ave. traffic. The city was not informed of the time changes and wrote Metro a strongly worded letter objecting to the changes.

ART TIMES

By Robert S. Hurwitz Three weeks ago this column asked for an expression of interest from people interested in forming a monthly art discussion group. With cultural interest in Miami being rather limited, I wasn't sure whether any replies would come in . . . but come in they did, from doctors, lawyers, housewives, artists and just people looking for a change. To say the least, I'm surprised, to say the most, I'm encouraged. From the sound of the replies, it appears that we are not as asleep or decayed culturally as the majority thinks. This program will be dedicated to informality, fun, meeting everyone personally and learning about art from discussion. Don't be scared by numbers. We'll have a small enough group so that each of you who comes will have equal opportunity to talk or listen. Several letters stated apologetically: I don't know anything, but I'd like to learn; is it all right if I attend? The answer is: We're all beginners in understanding of any kind and, yes; attend. It will be a great delight to meet and greet you at this first mixing of humanity. Here're the details - - - Date: Tuesday, Aug. 8. Place: Rocky Graziani Restaurant 2471 S.W. 32nd Ave. Time: 8:30 p.m. Dress: Informal.
