Teenagers Will Advise Metro Court

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Teenagers may have the opportunity to offer advice to the Metropolitan Traffic Court. For the first time they are asked to make suggestions to improve traffic safety instead of having advice given to them. Six members of a traffic safety committee were invited by Mr. William Frawley, Metro public information officer, to view the workings of the court and to serve as an advisory committee for the Metro Teen Drivers Program. LANCER staff members of Southwest High, Kathy Valetta, Joy Cherry, Marybeth Dittemore, Maureen Alberts, Jan Glidewell and Sandra Peyser were introduced to Judge Jack Turner, who assured the group that the court would do anything it could to assist the group with their safety program. He also said that there was a possibility that teenagers might serve jurors to try cases. Thanks to Floyd Holcomb, boys excelling in a special mechanics course offered at Southwest will have top opportunities for desirable jobs with the Ford Motor Company when they finish. Holcomb, among other mechanics teachers from across the nation was chosen to represent Miami in the Ford Motor Company's new trainee program in Detroit for two weeks last summer. Southwest students keep right on winning scholarships. Beverly Unick was awarded a 1961 National Health Foundation Scholarship in occupational and physical therapy at the University of Florida. One of 14 awards given in Florida, it will total $2,000 for four years. "No Time for Sergeants," the Broadway comedy of Army life, will be presented by the Southwest drama department Oct. 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. The 35 man cast is headed by Madison Kelley and Ford Mason. Several Southwest teachers will play the parts of officers. The students were selected after a week of auditions. Janet Ives, junior, has been selected as a Miss Teenage America finalist. She will compete with 99 other finalist October 12 for the Miss Teenage Miami title.
