WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

SIGHTS TO BEHOLD: Two husbands who wanted to see the Penn State - Miami football game last week gave in to their wives who wanted to see a movie instead. They didn't miss the football game, however. They sat in a local movie house with transistor radios plugged into the ears and listened to the game during the movie without disturbing anyone ... except their wives. * * * CHILDHOOD IN COLLEGE: It's amazing how childish some of the students at the University can be. Three University students set off firecrackers in a Gables theater last weekend and then ran out of the theater. The firecrackers were set off under the seat of some theatergoers. It frightened some of the women so that there was panic in several rows at the theater. One woman, frightened by the noise and blow-off of the firecrackers, fell in the theater aisle, breaking her glasses. Another woman also fell over a seat. The students escaped from the theater even though several people gave chase. However, they were identified as University students. This isn't the first such case of pranks by students. I remember being told of a group of students who let loose a few bags of land crabs in a theater in the Gables last summer. Somehow, it just isn't funny. * * * MISCELLANEOUS MEMOS: Residents in the Mangowood area have plans to form an "improvement association." Local leaders have set an Oct. 12 date for the formation meeting ... Local producers Alan Sherr and Jordan Gilman are planning a series of big-name concerts for the Miami area. They've already got Judy Garland signed to do a one-woman show here Nov. 25. If that's successful, they have plans for a series with Danny Kaye, Carol Channing and other top stars ... A young man who has been a comedian at Beach night spots for the past few years has given up show business. He's just bought a southwest home and said he'll sell insurance ... A wealthy Miami matron was showing off her new kitchen floor to friends when one of the guests told her that "Cookie's Restaurant in the Gables just put in the same floor." You could have knocked the matron over with a square of vinyl!

By EUNICE TALL Correspondent A committee, to formulate a Code of Ethics, has been formed at Palmetto High School through Student Council. The Code of Ethics will consist of moral principles and practices. Three divisions of the Code, Patriotism, Honor, and Service, will represent PHS or Palmetto High School. Pete Andrus and Paula Davis, of 10,000 high school seniors in the county, attained semi-finalist status. Chris Hager, a former Palmetto student, also is recognized as a semi-finalist. The semi-finalist group is composed of the highest scoring students in each state and in the United States Territories. * * * Representatives from colleges and universities will participate in the second annual Palmetto College Night, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. Under this program students and parents will be able to obtain direct information about certain colleges and universities of interest to them. A general meeting will first be held in the Palmetto Auditorium, 7460 SW 118 St., and then meetings in individual rooms will get underway. * * * Saturday night (Oct. 7) Palmetto Panthers will compete with the Southwest High School football team at Coral Gables Stadium, Coral Way, at 8:15 p.m. Following the game a Sock Hop for Palmetto students will be held, in the Palmetto gymnasium.
