Joint Meeting Ladies in the Lions' Den

(A Review) By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent Wednesday night of last week, 90 Lions and Lioness' devoured the roast beef buffet at the Coral Gables Country Club. And they roared their disapproval when L[?] Joe Murphy stretched out his tale too long. The affair, a combined meeting and ladies night for both Coral Gables and Suniland Lions Clubs, saw CG Lion President Bill May and Suniland's king of the beasts, Steve Stanfill, try to outroar one another with praise and platitudes for their respective lairs. Lions Whitey Rolfes and Ed Russo snarled out the introductions and some snappy re-p[?]rtee. But they were killing time and mostly w[?]ting for the highlight of the evening, the Coco Plum Women's Club, to entertain. This tightly-corseted group of 11 well-feathered ladies, romped onto the stage in single file, each blowing a gazooka, fashioned as a musical instrument. They wore multi-colored evening gowns with a red, yellow or green ostrich plume in their wide-brimmed floppy hats. Instrumentally, they hit cowbells with hammers, plicked at the one string-strumng[?] a wash tub, shook a flour sifter like a castanet, hooted into a goose neck lamp that wouldn't glow, wooden spooned a washboard and made with a Flit-gun like a Dorsey trom-bone. The talented musical director, May Suter, wore four-inch eyelashes that bounced when she blew a police whistle before each number. Helen Brooks, organizer of these music loving lunatics, played the piano. Ethel Eisfeller, an 84-year-old snare drummer, was featured. Her Rube Goldberg contraption had two skillets and a sauce pan turned upside down and fastened on an upright piece of water pipe. The drumhead was mounted in a small wash tub on top of an old nail keg. The majorette strutted with a bathroom plunger to "Alexander's Rag Time Band." Most everyone choked up when they marched off and on the stage again to "It's a Grand Old Flag." Every little movement had a meaning of its own as one lady imitated Sally Rand. Another gal of the 1900's, name unknown, dressed all in red, screeched through a chorus of "Red Wing," did a short dance, and screamed a second chorus above the tumultuous applause. Marie Casani, in a white silk evening gown, with blood red sash, sang a high soprano "You Made Me What I Am Today."

Story Hour Will Start Saturday at Shenandoah

A story hour for children of grades 4-6 will be held weekly at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays starting Saturday at the Shenandoah Branch of the Miami Public Library. These story hours are to introduce the world of literature to young readers, and to encourage reading. These programs will be held in the new children's room which was recently completed at the Shenandoah Branch Library. The foundation of the former patio formed the base for the new addition which gives a much needed increase in space to the library. At the first program Mrs. Ines Pages, children's librarian, will tell "The Magic Listening Cap," a Japanese folk tale told in the version of Yoshiko Uchida, "The Frog Prince," a Grimm fairy tale, and "Make Way for Ducklings," by Robert McCloskey. The Shenandoah Branch Library is located five blocks off Coral Way at 2111 SW 19th Street.
