He Outsmarled the Woodpeckers And His Monument Is Here Yet

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor As the City experiments with its new luminescent street marker numbers, it brings to mind when the present markers were first installed a quarter century ago. Allison B. Curry, 1000 Hardee Rd., was director of public service here (and city manager in 1939-1942) when the markers were installed in 1935. They were Curry's brainchild, a necessity of the times, he recalls. Curry and the city fathers were smarting under the upkeep of the first street markers, 8 foot wooden poles, with dovetailed wings painted blue. But the redheaded woodpeckers (they work the year 'round in Florida) and the hurricanes, plus the rot of the wood, made replacements costly. At that time as one post after another fell, they were replaced with concrete poles. Curry said the city commissioners, and the late Paul McGarry, then mayor, were interested when he suggested the one foot-high, 300 pound-markers. The name of the street and number underneath painted in black on a light background would last and last, he argued. He said the cost would be low, since they would make their own molds and cast the same. Mr. and Mrs. Curry are pioneers in Coral Gables. They have two sons, John W and Allison B. Jr. The Currys' first home, which they built on Toledo at the corner of Escobar, was a one-story Colonial type, set on a pie piece shaped lot. Mrs. Curry could be an interior decorator; she did her own home and it had charm. Now the family resides in a two-story home in the "French Village," and you can be sure the decor follows the name. You Can Park Cheaper on Oct. 1

Parking fees in the new attendant parking lot on Andalusia Avenue were reduced Tuesday by the City Commission. The Commission, after hearing reports on increased income but decreased use of the lot, decided to change the fees to 10 cents for the first two hours and five cents for every hour thereafter. The present fee, which goes out Oct. 1, is 15 cents for the first hour and 10 cents for each additional hour. At the same time, the City Commission ordered bigger and better signs to point out and explain use of the lot. And City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. has ordered pamphlets to explain the operation. The lot, formerly metered, was converted approximately 30 days ago to attendant-operated. Users obtain a ticket as they enter and pay the attendant on the way out for time used. Merchants have been participating in the plan by issuing stamps to their customers which pay for the first hour's parking.
