WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

with Ron Levitt ELECTION AFTERMATH: The Metro-McLeod Amendment debate and election may be over ... but the memory lingers on. It has been reported that two suburban Miami Democratic groups have filed a complaint to the Federal Communications Commission over remarks made by Art Green, local TV announcer and one of the principal speakers in behalf of the McLeod Amendment. Robert Fensholt, president of the Southwest Democratic Club and Carl Lovig, prexy of the Dade Democratic Club, jointly protested that Art Green, of WPST-TV, attacked the club and their members during a September broadcast. They said Green used his air time to call them names and then the TV station refused them equal time to answer his attack. The interesting part of the complaint, of course, is that WPST-TV will soon be off the air and replaced by a new Channel 10 anyway. ★ ★ ★ COMMUNITY SHELTER: The first big move to have a community fallout shelter in the Dade County area has begun in a Southwest suburban area. A group is trying to get 50 families together and put up $100 per person. A seven-man group has already begun organizing the corporation — a private, non-profit group. The group — which is trying to get a tract at SW 52nd Court and 64th Street for the shelter area — will try to sign up the 50 families in the area bordering 48th to 56th streets and 64th to 67th Avenues. They already have a sketch, designed by a local builder for a 50 by 100 foot shelter. The shelter would be buried three feet under the earth. They say the plans call for a generator, stoves, washrooms, and bunks curtained off into separate cubicles for privacy. The organizers of the community shelter hopes that their idea will gain fruition and that groups elsewhere will follow suit in building community shelters which would obviously be cheaper and could be much more fully equipped. ★ ★ ★ MISCELLANEOUS MEMOS: South Dade civic groups are trying to get together for a common front to have railroad crossings made safer. They're also urging new safeguards—mainly traffic lights on busy intersections crossing U.S. 1 . . . With private key clubs opening up all over Dade County, there is talk of one possibly being built in the Southwest Miami area. If it goes, it'll be called the "Snowbird Club." . . . The new Granada Presbyterian Church contains century-old brick from Civil War buildings brought here from Georgia especially for the church construction.

Five other lots, one west of the lot to be condemned and four east, are under negotiation for purchase from Mrs. Constance Le Jeune. After special training in each department they donned their pink and white striped uniforms and worked in the lab, medical records, diet kitchen, on the information desk, delivering mail, on the gift cart, as messengers, and as nurses helpers. They now have 87 members and have performed over 6,000 hours of service. Oct. 8, the Senior Auxiliary awarded the girls for their service.
