SW High Will Present 'No Time for Sergeants'
BY JOY CHERRY Correspondent "Where the Boys Are" (and the men) at Southwest High School will be evident Oct. 26-27 at 8 p.m. They will be on stage in "No Time for Sergeants," presented by Thespian Troupe 336 directed by Mrs. Lou McLean. Leading parts are divided among students and faculty men in the 32-member cast. The two-act comedy, adapted from the novel by Mac Hyman, had a long run on Broadway and was successful as a moving picture. Star student part of Will Stockdale, a naive hillbilly inductee, is played by Madison Kelly. Ford Mason is his buddy, Ben Whitledge. Richard Wiegel is hoodwinked General Bush. Five faculty men contribute added laughs to the plot which centers around frustrated Sergeant King, Joseph Shaw. Marvin Fields is cast as a psychiatrist outtalked by Will. Roger Griffin turns up as General Pollard; Edward C. Garvin is a colonel, and Jesse D. Wilson is a senator. Jerry Taft doubles as a preacher. There are only three girls in the cast although six others appear in dances and special numbers between acts. Ruth Ann Hellwig is Will's sister Rosabelle; Vivian Bonifer plays a nurse; and Crystal Hill sells cigarettes. Other students appearing in the cast are Ken Mitnick, Mike Blaine, Joel Landsman, Jim Hoodson, John Higgins, Mike Prescott, Jim Hirni, Lon Titus, Don Laiken, Art Conrad, Barry Haber, Ned Tennerbaum, Harold Saive and Ed Ball. Several students double in two parts. Terry Kelly is a bus driver and a second class corporal; Chris Bosley is a first class corporal and an aide to General (Roger Griffin) Pollard. John Lackey portrays an inductee and later turns up as Little Abel. Sets are handled by experienced Thespian Deborah Ramoser, while Cecile Griffin is costume director, and Crystal Hill is busines manager. Chery Talcott has charge of house, and Harold Saive is property manager. SENIOR CLASS The senior class activities are beginning to form into the mold that the newly elected officers have shaped. Working to make their last year at Southwest the best are president, Victor Theiling; vice-president, Patsye Doyle; secretary, Kathy Russe; and treasurer, Barbara Matulac. The immediate plans of these officers will be college night and the distribution of the senior class keys. Two Southwest students have achieved honors in the field of scouting. Eagle Scouts John B. King and Ronnie McGlade have each won the Eagle Scout Award, the highest given in scouting. A member of the Scouts for eight years, John was recognized at the Scout Exposition at Dinner Key for his achievements. Dr. Lee A. Aber, prinicpal, received a letter commending the scholastic performance of two former Southwest students from J. Wayne Reitz, president of the University of Florida. The students which had exceptionally fine records during their second semester, 1960-1961, are Irma Theresa Greene and Todd Allen Halpern. Spirit is supreme to the Southwest Miami High School cheerleaders. These girls have endured two rainy games and 90 degrees heat to show their spirit and confidence in the Eagles.
