COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

My son, Doug, 8, was due for a thrill. His anticipations are few and his wants are simple. But there was one thing Doug has wanted—to see a real college football game. He has played in plenty of front-lawn games. He wears the family helmet and the big boys tell him to charge in and get the boy on the other team carrying the ball—and Doug is contented. "Will you take me to see a college football game sometime?" he has asked repeatedly. "Yes," I have answered, hoping Doug would forget the promise I had so sincerely made. "I'll take you sometime when I have an extra ticket and I'm sure Miami is going to win." About two hours before the Navy game a friend who was going to the game with me called. He couldn't make it because he wasn't even in town. So I was left with two tickets, one for me and one for someone else. But who would the other person be? Joe was going already and it was too late to call Bill. And then Doug's eyes caught mine. "Why not take Doug," I thought. "I have an extra ticket and Miami should breeze through this game. He'll be out late, but he can sleep in the morning." So Doug was chosen to go. His eyes became as big as saucers and he rushed away to change his clothes. "Wear your old shoes, it might rain," I reminded him. After his hair was combed we got the transistor radio and the binoculars and headed for the car. We talked of school, football, Doug's friends and varied other subjects in our effort to reach the Orange Bowl. Doug carried the binoculars and I carried the radio from the car to the field. His eyes were wide and searching. They didn't miss much. "I'm going to play football when I get to college," he informed me. He intended it as a vow. And I told him I would certainly come to see him play. Peanuts have a fascination for a little boy at a football game. But peanuts make one thirsty and Coca Cola men were numerous at the Orange Bowl. "Why are they out there practicing," he asked amid the cracking of peanut shells. "They are not practicing but warming up," I informed him. And Doug sat there taking it all in. The kickoff came and Doug was standing on his seat. Play commenced and the peanut shells cracked. Doug cheered when I cheered and slapped his hip when Navy made a gain. Navy scored then and the peanut shells cracked in the silence. "I wish I could kick like that," was Doug's response to the kickoff. The halftime show was a drag to me but an eye-opener to Doug. The second half kickoff came and Doug asked more questions. I answered them with one eye on the game and the other on Doug. Miami scored then but they didn't make the extra point. And Doug was thirsty again. The Coke man was handy and we drowned our sorrows as the Navy team plodded down the field. Navy scored a field goal then and Doug didn't care. Miami was losing, but Doug was having a good time. This game will go on the top of the memory list but little Doug won't remember the score. He'll remember the lights and the people and the big men kicking footballs high in the air. We left halfway through the fourth quarter, but Doug didn't want to go. Navy [?won?] [?and?] going for a [TEXT LOST] He had seen a college game and he was already talking about it. He'd tell the big boys about it at school and the night he didn't have to go to bed at 8:30.
