Phooey on Metro, So SM Fills Holes On Sunset Itself

South Miami Council last Tuesday night, by a four to one vote, passed a resolution appropriating $10,220 for the resurfacing of a half mile of Sunset Drive, a county-maintained street, from South Dixie Highway to SW 69th Avenue. Fed up with promises, stalls and lack of maintenance by Metro, Council accepted the bid of The Brewer Co. of Florida, a paving contractor, to repave the street. Lone dissenter to the resolution was Councilman Joe Kline who questioned the legality of the repaving and brought out that by South Miamians will be paying twice for the repaving, since they already are paying taxes to Metro. "I don't think we have any right to spend $10,000 for the repaving of a street that should be repaved by Metro," Kline told his fellow councilmen. City Attorney George B. Hardie, Jr., ruled that the city does have the right to repave any street in the city it wishes. City manager C. B. Petry told Council that secondary road funds would not be available for the Sunset Drive repaving before the 1962-63 budget. "And it may be a few years after that before the paving is actually done," he said. The city has received numerous complaints about the condition of Sunset Drive and the city has pleaded with Metro to proceed now with the repaving. Metro, within the next several months, is planning to repave Sunset Drive from South Dixie Highway to Red Road. In other business, Council: APPROVED the application of Dante's Italian Kitchen, Inc., for a beer and wine license at 5952 South Dixie Highway. PASSED on first and second readings an ordinance decreasing the fees for public hearings before the Planning and Zoning Board from $20 to $10 and decreasing inspection fees from $10 to $1. PASSED on first and second readings an ordinance amending the city's code of ordinances to provide for a section on rules of procedure governing Council meetings.

In Our Area Fire's Something to Cackle About

By ADELE SITKIN Correspondent Farmers and housewives stood looking over their fields in the Southwest section Saturday afternoon wondering if a brushfire would turn in their direction. Lloyd Hedman, 21, and his parents arrived home at 4:30 p.m. and found a fleet of firetrucks on their property at 117th Avenue and 104th Street. For two hours firemen had been working to steer the flames from huts which contained 1,200 chickens and rabbits. A truckload of Boy Scout volunteers stood ready to help the firemen if needed. A line of flame spread over the 10-acre Hedman farm as far as the eye could see. At the end of this flame, firemen watered the field closest to the chickens. On the far side of the fiery wall another fireman fed the flames with gasoline to burn a path toward a creek where the fire would come to a controlled end. Lloyd guessed that a careless match or cigarette was the cause. Already, a large field near by the Hedman home was burned clear of all vegetation and small animal life. Asked what he might do with that ground, Lloyd gave a sad chuckle and said, "May-be we'll plant some tomatoes." Mrs. Hedman expects the egg production to be adversely affected because of the excitement. An abandoned house on a neighbor's property was burned to the ground. This and the burned brush were the only real damage.
