Cop's Wife Was Disabled In Accident; Gets $82,000

The 38-year-old wife of a South Miami policeman who was injured and permanently disabled in a car accident Sept. 15, 1960, has been awarded $82,000 after a four-day jury trial ending Friday. Mrs. Dorothy Kolar, 4061 SW 102nd Ave., suffered a broken neck and internal injuries. Her car was struck by one driven by off-duty Miami Police Officer Joseph Fassone near the Food Fair Store on Bird Road and 98th Ave. A jury of the Circuit Court of Dade County, after deliberating for almost four hours, awarded $65,000 to Mrs. Kolar, $15,000 to her husband and $1,000 to each of her two children, Robert Jr. and Bruce. Searching for witnesses to testify for Mrs. Kolar, her law firm placed an ad in The Guide a year after the accident. Mrs. Anthony Monaco, 10810 SW 47th Ter., saw the ad and came forward to testify for Mrs. Kolar.

They Want a City of Their Own Western Area Is Involved

A West Dade group, tired of what it calls Metro's inertia, is beating the drums for incorporation of a large area west of Miami that could become Dade's 28th municipality. Laying plans and citing the need for better fire, police and zoning protection, the group has circulated 3,000 brochures telling of the group's plans. Another 8,000 to 10,000 brochures are waiting to be mailed. Calling itself CITY (Committee to Incorporate This Year) the group also is circulating petitions at key points in the area for signatures to present to the County Commission. If the County Commission gives its blessing to the area's incorporation, a special election will be held within the area. If 50 per cent, plus one of those voting, are for incorporation, the city will be founded. The area includes SW 8th Street on the north, North Kendall Drive on the south, SW 97th Avenue on the west and FEC railroad tracks near SW 70th Street on the east. President of CITY is Gene P. Flinn, 5100 SW 87th Ave., who is an insurance underwriter with offices in Coral Gables. "We are tired of living in an area with no representation, no identification and no municipal services," Flinn said this week. "We drastically need better police and fire protection and better zoning. We have no one to speak for us on the County Commission and are like the stepchild of Metro government." The group has three other officers and a board of directors containing some 16 persons. Most of those connected with CITY are or have been former members of Miller Heights Civic Association, a group which has spurred civic improvements in the Miller Drive—Galloway Road area. "The idea of incorporation has been discussed out here for quite some time," Flinn said. It reached the action stage when we each chipped in a few Continued on Page 6 THEY WANT their area as a separate city. S. Miami, Gables Tour These Scouts Tromp in Past So They Can Serve in Future

Twenty-one Girl Scouts stepped into the past so they could serve the future last Friday. Members of Girl Scout Troop 474, which meets at the Riviera Presbyterian Church, visited historic landmarks in Coral Gables and South Miami. The girls, starting from Cartegena Plaza, Sunset Drive at Le Jeune Road, also walked the same paths tread in the early 1900's by our first settlers. The trip was part of the 50th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America. Motto is "Honoring the Past and Serving the Future." Some places the Girl Scouts visited was the old Rogers homestead on Sunset Drive. It was here in 1899 that the family opened a guava jelly farm. The path continued down Sunset Drive to the home of Mrs. Robert Dorn. She's the daughter-in-law of a family who settled here in 1911.
