Grumbles Heard Amid Noise of Giralda Work

Repaving and beautification of Giralda Avenue got under-way last week amid grumbling from some merchants about the timing. The $15,367 is scheduled to be completed by Harris Paving Construction Co. in mid-November and no later than the Dec. 1 deadline, according to William Fagan, city public works director. Former city commissioner Ed Rogers first proposed the project several months ago after Gulf Oil Co. moved into the old post office building. The project dragged because of a series of changes that were made in plans which cut costs, originally figured at $40,000. "Everybody was involved. I don't think anybody was to blame," said Fagan. Traffic will be open except for a few days when the street is being paved, he said. Involved in the changes were beautification, parking and a traffic island. As recently as three weeks ago, one merchant appealed to the Commission to change parking plans again. Present plans call for a nine-foot wide sidewalk—one foot wider than it had been, planting bins, one-way traffic, parallel parking on both sides, and repaving the street. Parking had been angle on the southside and parallel on the north side.
