They Want a City

Continued from Page 1 bucks to have some brochures printed and some petitions drawn up." CITY has over 175 petitions out now, each able to accomodate some 30 names. The group hopes to present to Metro petitions totaling some 5,250 names. "After people read the brochure, the idea is well received," Flinn added. "But the first objection is to paying more taxes. "We hope to present to the people a plan whereby there will be little or no taxes at all." Flinn said that proposed income from the embryo city would come from cigaret taxes collected within the incorporated area and a nickle or a dime a head on each person attending Tropical Park Race Track. Suggested names for the city are Tropical Park and Tropical Park Village. "We here in this area pay exorbitant fire insurance rates," Flinn pointed out. "We could cut this way down by having our own fire department. The only way for us to have one is to incorporate." Flinn also cited the area's need for a library, utility regulations (charges for water in the area are some of the highest in the county), planning, speed regulations through residential streets, better garbage and trash collection and a recreation program. "As it is now," Flinn said, "we have practically none of these. A city brings people closer together. We would have more civic clubs, more athletic events and probably a national bank." Under prevailing laws, a national bank can only be located in a municipality.
