Meet World's Biggest 3 1/2 Pounds of Beef Hearts Isn't The Luncheon for a Feist Dog
By JOE MORRIS Herald Correspondent I hadn't visited my friends John and Dorothy Hillyer for long time so Saturday afternoon I dropped by their home at 6631 SW 62 Ct. I rang the front door bell and waited. Then I called. No one answered. I started to open the door and enter. I'm glad I didn't. Suddenly, two dogs, the size of Shetland ponies, bounded up to the thin screen door and looked out at me. Their giant-sized heads were on a level with mine. In horror I stared into their large amber eyes. Halfway to my car and still running I heard John call, "Come on back Joe, they won't hurt you." I went back to meet and make friends with the only two Irish Wolfhounds in Florida. This breed of dog, largest in the world and similar in shape and almost as fast as a greyhound, is bigger than a mastiff, strong as an ox, gentle as a lamb and intelligent like a human being. They look like young lions without manes and when I patted "Mr. Carmichael," three-years-old, and larger of the pair, I felt like Daniel in the lion's den. He eats 3 1/2 pounds of beef hearts or kidneys mixed with dog food every day and weighs 180 pounds. He sniffed and nudged me around the room as if I were a plaything, while 'Kelty", the 2 1/2 year old bitch and nearly as big as her husband, jumped on the two-place sofa and sat upright like a person. Her mouth, hung open as if she were smiling. "She doesn't know she is a monster," her owner said. "She thinks she's a lap dog." And his wife added, "I've had the love seat recovered three times. But who cares when you love dogs?" The Hillyers bred and trained German Shepherds until they bought Mr. Carmichael three years ago in Virginia. Now they "expect" to do the same with Wolfhounds. "We hope," they said, "that Kelty is in a family way. With big dogs you are never sure and we won't know until two weeks before the pups are due next month." Kelty's soft, amber eyes gave the impression she was listening to them talk about her but preferred not to think about what they were saying. "Her pups will be worth from $350 up," John said. "Some pups have sold as high as $1,500. But if she throws a pure white or pure black (once chance in a million) it will be priceless," he chuckled. Wolfhounds hunted and destroyed the last of the wolves in Ireland around 1780," Mrs. Hillyer explained. "Being fleet of foot they'd jump on a wolf's back, clamp their vise like jaws in the neck, and ride the victim to death. There are not many in this country. "We wanted to enter ours in the dog show in Atlanta next month but there are no other entries and therefore no competition." Mr. Carmichael has won the "CD" (companion dog) award. This is a step higher than a championship award and requires much training in obedience. Kelty is still in training but together they personify an old Gaelic slogan: "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked."
