Mechanical Brain Smarter Than Man, But We're on Top
South Miami Kiwanians stepped into the world of tomorrow last Thursday. And they found out a few things that astonished them. Did you know a "mechanical brain" can learn in a few minutes what it takes man a lifetime to learn. That this brain is nothing more than "a third grade moron?" But this same brain can make your work easier by doing it in less time. These were main points in the talk given Kiwanians at their weekly luncheon by an electronics man, Rick Eirich, of Milgo Electronics Corp., Hialeah. The great advantage of a mechanical brain, said Eirich, is that it can work with numbers "better" and "faster" than can man. Freeing man from this detailed work with numbers can allow him to spend more time in work that is creative and imaginative, Eirich said. For example, the brain, technically called a digital computer, can help accountants and engineers by doing much of the math work. The brain can translate English into Russian or any other languate faster than could a human translator. The brain can make predictions. Who will be the next president of the United States? Or where will the enemy missile be 20 seconds from now? Will this brain ever replace man's mind? "Yes and no," Eirich said. "It all depends on how you define thinking." Man needs four factors to think his way to a decision. They are information, experience, memory and judgment. The brain can acquire all of these. But it can not equal man's creativity or imanigation and so the mind is still superior to the machine, Eirich said. But the brain is superb. It can, fed by tape, learn in moments what it takes a human a lifetime to acquire, the electronics expert said. The brain can give only a "Yes" or "No" answer. Compared to man—who can give a more extensive reply — the machine actually is "a third grade moron with a memory," Eirich said.
