COUNTY LINE

with Ed Knight HOLIDAY AFTERTHOUGHTS — It was the coldest one, nearly a white Christmas in Miami... it was a prosperous Christmas, no children I saw seemed wanting for toys... not as many motorists used their headlights in the daytime as did during the Labor Day weekend. Too many earned safety through a dead battery. MORE AFTERTHOUGHTS —Never in the history of Miami have so many major stores been open on Sunday. It was Sunday, Dec. 24, the day before Christmas, a day spent in getting last-minute gifts. As a result of these mass Sunday openings, the Greater Miami Council of Churches and the Ministerial Association are pressing for plans to make sure the Sunday openings won't occur again next year. WHAT THE ministers don't realize is that the stores will remain open on Sunday as long as the stores are well patronized. During most of the year, there is little need for a store to open on Sunday. Shoppers can get what they want during the week. Besides, the store owners and employes themselves abhor the Sunday opening. It means a seven-day week to them. But near Christmas, the business is there. MORE AFTERTHOUGHTS —Chrismas tree sellers were hurt by the influx of aluminum trees sold in the area ... one of the busiest days for shopping in downtown Miami was not before but after Christmas. It was jammed downtown on Dec. 26, not a parking space to be had. I wonder why. Nuff about the holidays. * * * METRO'S TRANSIT Authority, just biding its time until it will be in the transportation business, released plans last week to give Dade one of the finest transportation systems in the country. If even half of what the authority promises comes true, west and south Dade residents will be mighty pleased. ACCORDING TO Raymond W. Butler Jr., authority chairman, the emphasis will be on better transportation service at lower cost. If this is true, it means that about half of the cars commuting to and from Miami each day can stay at home for the little lady to use. It could mean that property values will increase, that traffic will not be so hazardous, that fewer super highways will be needed, and time and money will be saved by riding public conveyances. FIRST STEP for the authority is to unify the four bus companies being purchased now and initiate transfers from Miami to the beach. During this time will come better crosstown and express routes and a zone fare system. NEXT WILL come the purchase of several more county bus lines and the extension of routes to feasible limits in the suburbs. After this will be an analysis of rapid transit studies with plans for implementation of rapid transit facilities from Homestead to Palm Beach. BUT BETWEEN now and the rapid transit will be the development of suburban bus terminals, with park-ride lots scattered throughout the county and commuter train service along the routes of the rapid transit.
