Refinish old furniture to give room style
dear decorator ... al evans Dear Decorator: My bedroom carpeting is bright yellow, walls are pale yellow and drapes are plain white. My sister gave me a very pretty, but old, bedroom set, mahogany wood. Can I brighten things up any or pass my hand-me-down to someone else and buy a new white set? Mrs. Gloria Snyder Kendall Dear Second-Hand Rose: Dark bedroom set — or suites, as they were once known — can get a bit heavy and monotonous, I agree. But if you like it, why not update it a bit and refinish the night stands in a white-lacquere, use a great contemporary print on your spread in navy, yellow and white. Add some pretty navy and white accessories, and VOILA ... a room with some punch and style! Won't sister be jealous! Dear Decorator: We are undecided about the window treatment in our game room. The walls are very dark grey-brown paneling, carpeting is brown, tan and rust shag. The only furniture in the room is a regulation-size billiard table and some chrome-framed prints. We don't think we want drapes or curtains. What do you think? Mrs. Marilyn Parker Coral Gables Dear Undecided: I think you need some color and sparkle in your game room. The chrome-framed prints on the wall were a step in the right direction. Good thinking. Now let's pick that up on your windows. How about those attractive and practical mini-blinds? Pick the tan and rust in your carpet, mix it with some shiny chrome slats in any combination, and you have light, bright color and sparkle, low maintenance, low cost and a solution to your problem.
