Their home is 'Who's Who' in contemporary design

By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer It's easy to drive by the Aronsons' South Dade home and not see it behind the dense jungle that nearly conceals it from view. Pine trees tower over the house at the edge of the property, and it was toward their preservation that the house was built at an angle, with its side facing the street. Inside, the home is modern and sophisticated, done predominantly in shades of brown and beige, and much of the furniture constitutes a veritable Who's Who in contemporary design: Mies van der Rohe "Barcelona" chairs, Knoll dining room table, Eames chairs, Marcel Breuer "Cesca" chairs and the famous Saarinen "Womb" chair. Large white Cuban tiles cover the floor in the entrance hallway, living and dining rooms, and practically every inch of wall space is occupied by the family's collection of fine lithographs. For personal touch, Mrs. Aronson's own handcrafts - woven mats and rugs, macrame hangings, sisal baskets, needlepoint and ceramic pieces - are displayed throughout the house. Mrs. Aronson says that one of her husband Hugh's passions is gardening, and he and their sons are responsible for all the landscaping on their extensive property. On the patio he maintains a "plant hospital," where ailing greenery can be nursed back to health. (A tennis court behind a kidney-shaped pool are indications of how the Aronson family stays healthy.) Off the dining room on one side is the master bedroom, and on the other side a very large area which is divided into the family room, kitchen and breakfast nook. The family room has a large L-shaped seating unit covered in a nubby oatmeal fabric, and liberally sprinkled with blue and white batik pillows. The walls here are paneled and covered with colorful poster art. Mrs. Aronson proudly shows off the dozens of large black-and-white photographs lining the long hallway leading from the family room to the "teen wing," which she says are her husband's other passion. He has won prizes for his photos in various exhibits, and maintains a professional darkroom in the garage. Only one of the Aronsons' five children occupies the "teen wing" full-time - Judy, 16, a student at Ransom-Everglades, where she is a co-captain of the cheering squad. Her 18-year-old brothers are freshmen in college, and another brother and sister are married.
