Volleyball team FIU takes regional title

At the start of the volleyball season, Florida International University coach Dr. Judy Blucker vowedthat her team would compete in the National Championship Tournament. She was right. The Sunblazers put their game together at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Southeastern Regional Tournament held at the University of Alabama Nov. 18-20. The only setback was delivered by Alabama, who defeated FIU twice to take the regional title. But the second-place Sunblazers ran through the pool play, winning all four of their matches. This made them second seed in the double elimination part of the tournament. In that double elimination, the squad beat Mississippi University for Women and advanced to play Alabama in the winners' bracket. Alabama then downed FIU for scored of 15-5 and 16-14 so that the Sunblazers had to meet MUW for the third time in the tournament. And FIU defeated MUW for the third time, 15-12, and 15-9. "In the final, we had to play Alabama on their home court before what I would say was a crowd of 600 screaming fans'" commented coach Blucker. "That helped them, 'but they were also playing the best I've seen the entire season." The Crimson Tide went on to clinch the title in two straight games, 15-11 and 15-4. Nevertheless, stand-out Sunblazers were Betty Williams, the team's big spiker, Kathy Fraser, the team's other leading spiker and Karen Clark, who gave a find all-around performance. Now Dr. Blucker's Sunblazers are one step away from the national title, their goal. The AIAW Volleyball National Tournament is scheduled for Dec. 9-11 at the University of Texas in Austin. FIU plans to go to the tournament loose because they will be low on the seeding list. However, the team plans to pull some major upset - and win the national championship.
