St. Patrick's Day Parade cancelled

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The South Miami Chamber of Commerce decided this week to cancel its St. Patrick's Day Parade through the streets of downtown South Miami. The chamber's new President, William Johnson, told the South Miami City Council Tuesday night, Jan. 18, the chamber's board of directors decided to cancel the parade because of increasing costs. He said the parade may be replaced with an ethnic carnival, featuring foods, dances and costumes from different countries. "We had 52 total units in the parade last year," Johnson said, "and only four to five bands. You can't keep on putting on a parade like this. We realized that we either had to get bigger or discontinue the parade altogether. "We used to be able to get a good high school band four years ago for $100," Johnson added. "Now it takes $300 to $400, and the chamber just doesn't have that kind of money to put out for an event such as a parade which is not drawing the crowds it was intended to." Johnson said that the chamber sought professional outside help for the parade, which would have been held in March, and after talking with the consultants, decided to cancel the parade. This is the second yearly event originally scheduled for spectator viewing in March in downtown South Miami which has been cancelled. At the council's Jan. 4 meeting, the promoter of the second annual South Miami bicycle races cancelled the races because he and the council couldn't get together on a route for the races after a merchant complained that he lost business last year due to the route.

Monetary arrangement for project questioned

By MARGIE KENIN Correspondent Six of the 13 property owners along the 100 block of Giralda Avenue have expressed approval of creating a "Giralda Plaza" there. However, businessmen are still concerned about the monetary arrangements for the project — who is going to pay, how much it will cost and how it will affect their taxes. Ron Robison, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce's Keep the City Beautiful Committee, said during the Ponce de Leon Development Association meeting Monday that the committee is working to answer those questions. In creating a "Giralda Plaza," the exterior architectural design of the shops along the block would be unified. "There are many shops there that could be enhanced by efforts to beautify them," Robison said. During the meeting, Robison said that the committee has drafted a proposal to have the Venetian Pool preserved for posterity. Next month a "Nominate Your Neighbor" campaign will be launched to choose a commercial property that has been beautified Robison said he hopes to have more nominees than in past campaigns.

Cop was on leave

From Page 1 while he was on duty, and there was absolutely no marijuana taken from the police department property room," said Dennis Koronkiewicz, PIO officer for the Gables police. "Gully was on annual leave at the time of his arrest," said Koronkiewicz. Also arrested at the scene was Robert D. Piel, 29, who was charged with conspiring to violate state narcotics laws and carrying a concealed firearm, and Sheryl Andries, 29, charged with possession of narcotics. Additional charges against Gully are pending by Public Safety. According to Sgt. H. Purcell of the Gables VIN unit, Gully could get anywhere from 10 to 15 years if found guilty on all charges. "We are always willing to cooperate fully with any law enforcement agency in the investigation of any member or members of the police department," said Edwards. "I want to commend the Department of Public Safety for the professional manner in which they handled this investigation and arrest."
