He participated in and directed most of Coral Gables public works construction and planning during the early period of the city's development. Coming to Miami to serve as assistant to the city manager of Coral Gables in 1925, he assumed the position of city engineer in the same year. In 1931, Mr. Friedman was appointed as the first full time county engineer of Dade County. He was directly instrumental in starting county zoning (acting at one time as county zoning director) and helped A.D. Barnes, director of county parks, and C.H. Crandon develop the basic idea of starting Haulover Beach, Crandon Park and Rickenbaoker Causeway. Mr. Friedman was an active member of Florida Engineering Society, Engineers, American Institute of Consulting Engineers, Society of American Military Engineers and Tau Beta Pi. He was listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Engineering. The Miami Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society selected Mr. Friedman as "Engineer of the Year" in 1964. He received service awards the following two years. The American Society of Civil Engineers annually presents the "Edmund Friedman Professional Recognition Award" and the "Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement" in honor of Mr. Friedman's services and achievements.
