Cozy bedroom is a 'small' problem

Dear Decorator: I would appreciate a little advice on my problem. My bedroom is on the small side, with twin beds, bedside table, dresser, and highboy chest of drawers. The walls are light blue with white doors and trim. The furniture is off-white with a little gold. What type of rug and color would you advise? Mrs. K. Jensen Coral Gables Dear "On-the-smallside": Yours is really a small problem (pardon the pun). Aside from breaking the walls down, there really isn't much you can do to enlarge a room—so just enjoy your cozy bedroom. As for your carpeting, a lovely shade of blue, perhaps two tones darker than your walls, would be fine. I like a plush-type carpeting for bedrooms (it feels great to bare feet). If you like color, add some accessories in bright yellow and crisp white. A large-scale wall-covering or graphic gives the illusion of space. Try it—you'll like it! Dear Decorator: The purple/blue/green living room furniture that looked so sophisticated in my old Manhattan apartment looks so dark and dismal in my new Miami house. The situation is not helped by the fact that this room faces north and receives light for only a short time every day. Even at night, because of the high, beamed ceiling, it's difficult to adequately illuminate the room. The furniture is dark walnut, with the exception of a black Oriental bench, which is expendable, and a mahogany baby grand piano, which isn't. The carpeting and curtains are celery, but appear much darker most of the time. Can you suggest a way of livening up this room? Doris Stern Kendall Dear Sophisticated Lady: Nothing's a surer cure for "dismal" than the sparkle of surface materials such as glass, chrome and mirror, and the addition of bright snow white to your color scheme. Though your furnishings sound traditional, the addition of the "contemporary" materials I suggest will be a pleasant blend of the new with the old. Opposites create interest! Track lighting (chrome bullets) on dimmers mounted on your high beamed ceiling is a perfect example! To pick your color scheme up, use accents and accessories in bright hot purple, electric blue and lime green—the same basic colors, but more intense tones, together with lots of white. Don't be afraid to use color and sparkle. Evans will answer letters personally, should space limit those which can be published. Real Estate MEL AUGUST G.R.I. REALTOR IMPROVEMENT CAN BE COSTLY

You can make a million mistakes trying to sell your own home. And one of them is making the wrong improvements. Many times, an expensive addition or repair can be the kind of thing that'll cost you far more than you get back. True, the house should present a favorable appearance — mowed lawn, trimmed shrubs, and no obvious indications of neglect, but it's rare when a large financial undertaking will bring more than its cost in the final selling price. There is always the financial risk of miscalculation too. Home repair costs frequently end up a lot higher than originally anticipated. You may end up with a faster sale and less inconvenience if you lower the selling price an equivalent amount. Instead of guessing as to how much, if any, repair work to undertake, see a Realtor. He can tell you what to do to make your home more salable. And what not to do so you won't lose money. *********** If there is anything we can do to help you in the field of real estate, please phone or drop in at M. AUGUST & CO.
