Gables commissioner heads petition drive
From Page 2 to run for mayor of Coral Gables in April, said his stand against the ordinance has nothing to do with politics. "In the past I have taken stands for things that I believed were right. It has nothing to do with my plans to run for mayor," he added. Brake is also a leader in the Right to Life movement against abortion. Brake, along with Anita Bryant, the singer, and other opponents of the ordinance will present a petition to the Metro Commission Feb. 1 for approval to circulate it. They plan to get at least 10,000 signatures within 30 days to force a referendum on repealing the ordinance. On Thursday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. there will be a rally held at Crown Interiors Warehouse in West Dade to kick off the petition drive. If the opponents of the ordinance muster the required signatures within the specified period of time, the Metro Commission has the option to repeal the ordinance or call for a special county election. "We are hoping that they will repeal the ordinance themselves and save the voters of Dade County the expense of a special election," said Brake.
Gay community wants civil rights
From Page 2 Rockway, 33, directors of the Transperience Center in Coconut Grove, both believe that the ordinance banning discrimination against gay people is an extension of the Civil Rights Movement. They also believe that if the ordinance goes to a referendum, the opposition will win. "The zealous crusade on the part of a small group of Fundamentalists political opportunists and anti-Equal Rights Amendment leaders to repeal basic American freedoms is almost without precedent in America," said Kunst.
Chief hopes to improve efficiency of department
From Page 1 have given in the past," said Edwards. As for the recommendations made in a recently published police survey, Edwards said that he hopes to make some organizational changes in the staff that will improve the efficiency of the department. "Coral Gables is a very special community and has a very special kind of police department," Gainer said. "I know that Chief Edwards will provide the leadership to continue the high level of police service that the people of Coral Gables desire and deserve." At 61, Edwards' retirement has been extended since April 1976. The new police chief, who lives just west of the City of Coral Gables, served as president of the Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police. Considered an expert of firearms, Edwards is a long-time member of the Coral Gables Pistol Team.
