This cowboy's has about all he could handle trying to bust this bronc at last year's Homestead rodeo. This year's event promises more of the same, plus a few extras. The action's going on this weekend at the Homestead Rodeo grounds on U.S. 1.

Buckin' broncs battle cowboys in Homestead

The 29th Annual Championship Rodeo will be held this weekend at the Homestead Rodeo Grounds on U.S. 1 just south of Homestead. Sponsored by the Homestead Rodeo Association, this year's event will attract cowboys from all across the country and is expected to draw at least 15,000 spectators. The rodeo opened Saturday morning with a parade through downtown Homestead, and the action moved in the afternoon to FIU, Miami-Dade Community the rodeo grounds where championship stock and cowboys competed in such events as Brahma bull riding, steer wrestling and bronc busting. This year's rodeo will also feature a barrel race for girls, the Florida Blue Grass singers, and precision riding by the Homestead Everglades Posse. On the perimeter of the rodeo arena, local clubs, charitable organizations and civic groups have set up booths and concession stands. The Miccosouki Indians, who come each year from their 40-Mile Bend Reservation, will be selling Indian jewelry, handcrafts, and "Indian Bread."

Ted Williams to talk on hitting at clinic

Ted Williams will be the featured speaker at a baseball clinic Saturday, Feb. 12 at Florida International University. Sponsored by the FIU Department of Athletics and the Department of Conferences and Short Courses, the clinic will take place on the Tamiami Campus from 9 a.m. to noon. The clinic is open to baseball coaches, students and other interested persons.

UM women practice hard for basketball season

The University of Miami women's intercollegiate basketball team will open its 15-game winter schedule on Sunday, Jan. 9, against Manhattanville College at 7 p.m. in the William A. Lane Recreation Center. All UM home games are played in the Center and are open to the public without charge. Shula Feuer, who is coaching the team for the second year, says, "It's a young team with only four players returning, but they're highly motivated and dedicated. They have been practicing five hours a day during the winter recess, and I'm optimistic we'll have a good season." Returning veterans are Marcie Bell, Wendy Foote, Kim Lusinski and Barbara Rubin. Newcomers are senior Nancy Segall and freshmen Debbie Baker, Chandra Coffey, Sue Hartman, Mandy Hotchkiss, Barbara Castineria, Dorothy Richardson, Liz Surow- itch and Margaret McCrystal. The Lady Hurricanes will close the season by hosting the state AIAW tournament for large schools, Feb. 24-26. Florida International, the University of Florida, Florida State and University of South Florida, as well as the UM, will participate. Last season the women finished fifth in the state tournament and third in the Flagler Invitational.

Ladies play short tourney

Gladys White shot a 31 to take the Championship Class of the Biltmore Women's Golf Association's Nine Shortest Hole Tournament. Held Jan. 6, the tournament was played with one half handicap. In other divisions, Lois Britton won the "A" Class with a 25. Penny Cullen shot a 25 1/2 to win the "B" Class, and Doe Roth and Mabel Marion tied in the "C" Class with a 29 1/2.
