dear decorator . . . al evans Large, interesting area rug best bet for 2-story 'gallery' staircase wall
Dear Decorator: I have a two-story townhouse. I have hung paintings against the wall of the stairway, but I am not pleased with the effect. Have you another suggestion? The wall is painted white. Mrs. Margery Kunin Perrine Dear Displeased: Perhaps the reason you're not pleased with the effect of your "gallery" stairway wall is that the scale is wrong. The large expanse of wall on a two-story staircase does not lend itself well to a group of small paintings. One large painting would help, but an even more interesting treatment would be the use of a large, exciting area rug (4x6 or 6x9 if you have room). There are beautiful ones available now at most every budget. Another suggestion would be a great, dramatic macrame wall hanging, which looks great with the California-type architecture of some townhouses. Let me know if you're pleased. Dear Decorator: I'm sure my wife is losing her mind. We've lived in our home for six years and she's still decorating and redecorating. When will it end? Her latest bit is redoing my son's room in red, white and blue. Please help me put a stop to this madness, before it's too late. Mr. Lou Schwartz Kendale Lakes Dear Head-Shrink: Forgive me if I make no comment as to the state of your wife's mind. As for her compulsion to be constantly decorating, she's not alone, if that's any consolation. Many women just cannot make a decision, and when they finally do, they're sure it's wrong and must be done again, and again. Suggest a consultation and some guidance with a qualified interior designer. The proper decision made once is quite enough. Now, for her red, white and blue fixation. I've heard of patriotism and the Bicentennial fever, but enough is quite enough. Red, white and blue for our "grand old flag" is perfect, and though I'm proud to be an American, it's awful for an interior color scheme in any room. Good luck. Be patient, but be firm! Evans will answer letters personally, should space limit those which can be published. Those wishing a private consultation with Evans can leave a message to that effect at The Times-Guide office 666-7981, Ext. 25. Real Estate MEL AUGUST G.R.I. REALTOR
FUTURE SHOCK!!! If you had bought a defense bond for $18.75 during World War II and redeemed it for its face value of $25 ten years later, you would have lost money on your investment. Why? Because the $25 would have been worth less than the $18.75 was 10 years earlier. That's inflation and its pace has quickened since 1945. What would happen if the cost of living increased six percent a year compounded? (Low by today's standards). A home that cost $35,000 now would cost $112,250 in 20 years and almost unbelievable $201,022 in 30 years. What does all this mean? Whatever your age, you must find a way to create an income in addition to your pay check. Although there is no such thing as the perfect investment, real estate may be the nearest thing to it. It can be an income producer, a shelter from high taxes, and an ideal protection from the ravages of inflation. Real estate values historically increase faster than general inflation prices and maintain a higher value than most assets in depression. The ideal hedge. * * * * * * * * * * * * If there is anything we can do to help you in the field of real estate, please phone or drop in at M. AUGUST & CO. INC. REALTORS, 9135 Galloway Rd., Miami.
