Tambourine shaking successful in helping mom, children
Rev. Stanley Stuart and his wife Minnie, armed with bags of groceries, helped fill a refrigerator that contained nothing but eggs. Photo by KAY SEVERINSEN By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer The Rev. Stanley Stuart has been standing on a step outside the Perrine Post Office every afternoon for almost a year, shaking a little tambourine and asking for money. Last week he totalled it all up and decided he had enough to give away to someone who really needed it. Stuart is the president of the House of Peace, a charitable organization with three members, him, his wife and his son-in-law, who lives in New York. So Thursday, he and his wife, Minnie found a woman living with six children in a small, condemned house in South Miami. Armed with bags of groceries and garbed in white suits, the Stuarts drove to her house in their old Ford. The woman and her two grandchildren were very excited. Stuart opened two little bags of Cracker Jacks and gave them to the children. The little house was heated only by a wood-burning fire, the floor was peeling away, the kitchen had no light and the stove was broken. There was nothing in the refrigerator except eggs. "It's so wonderful to know that someone cares," the woman exclaimed. She and her six children live on Aid for Dependent Children, a total of $170 a month. They pay $85 a month for the condemned house. The woman's children are aged 17, 15, 10, 13. His oldest daughter has taken a job three days a week she says, so they will now have a little more income. The Stuarts say they have enough money from donations to feed the woman's family for a month. After that, they hope the family will be moved to a better place. The House of Peace has been is existence for four years, the Stuarts say, and they have the official papers to prove their function. It all came to Stanley after he retired from the stock market. "I've always been religious, but I decided I wanted to do something for God and he told me to do his work. I believe that this is it," he explains.
