Sutton, Anderson To Attend Kiwanis Convention in 'Chi'
O. B. Sutton and Henry Clay Anderson will be numbered among the business and professional leaders from all sections of the United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii who will descend upon Chicago Sunday, June 29 for the 32nd annual convention of Kiwanis International. Sutton is president of the local club and Anderson is district governor. Some 10,000 persons are expected to attend the five-day meeting, which will be based on the service organization's administrative theme for this year, "Build for Peace - Patriotism - Opportunity." The program will feature addresses by outstanding figures in American and Canadian public life, election of officers, club activity conferences and the foremost in entertainment. J. N. Emerson, Pullman, Wash., prominent west coast chain store owner and president of Kiwanis International, will preside at the various sessions. The convention will open Sunday evening, June 29, with an address by the Rev. Norman Vincent Peale, pastor of New York City's historic Marble Collegiate Church, and close Thursday morning, July 3, following the appearance of Earl Bunting, president of the National Association of Manufacturers. Special features have been planned for wives of Kiwanians in attendance, while a teen-age canteen will be established for boys and girls.
JINX But It's Carleene's Birthday, Too
Friday the thirteenth is no bugaboo to Carleene Whalen, daughter of Police Sergt. and Mrs. C. W. Whalen. The day that most people fear as an omen of misfortune is Carleene's birthday and she's pretty happy about it. The Junior Queen of the Youth Center is nine years old today and naturally it's a joyous occasion and not one to be considered as a jinx. Carleene's favorite pastimes, incidentally, are drawing and swimming.
Gables Dogs Entered in Miami Show
Twenty-five entrants from Coral Gables, have been received for the Greater Miami Dog Club's first sanction show, which opens at noon Sunday at the Dade County Armory, it was announced today. Judging begins at 1 p.m. with a children's class slated for 8 p.m. The show has been sanctioned by the American Kennel Club. The buk of the accident total in 1946 was made up of one or two-death accidents, the National Safety Council reports. Only two catastrophes in 1946 caused more than 50 deaths-the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta which took 119 lives, and the La Salle Hotel fire in Chicago with a toll of 61.
City Budget Is Slashed After Probe
(Continued from Page One) age will be set at 12.5, debt refunding 7.5 and special benefits for storm damage, 1 mill. Proposed increases in salaries for city employees were not attacked by the committee in an overall sense as committee members pointed out they did not feel qualified to do so in the limited amount of time allowed for budget study. Commissioner Holley, however, in his letter stated that under Public Works, salaries are increasing out of proportion to income, and criticised the practice of paying an electrical inspector 60 per cent of the permit fee. He pointed out that it is estimated that the inspector would net $4,200 for his part time work, and with the $5,000,000 University building and other scheduled construction he would gain much more than that. Holley said that he was not opposed to warranted salary increases provided taxes are not increased. Open hearing on the budget has been slated for 5 p.m. on June 24 in city hall. The only age group to show a decrease in accidental deaths in 1946 was the 5-14 year olds, which fell 8%, according to the National Safety Council. Safety experts attributed the decrease to the effectiveness of safety education in the school age group, and the safety program launched by the President's Highway Safety Conference.

(Continued from Page One) and composers, now local residents, that Greater Miami will take its place as a cradle of music for the South, if not for the Nation," Washburn concluded. Washburn also commented on the J. P. Riddle Foundation for Orchestral Composition, stating "the Foundation has created a great deal of favorable comment by music lovers.
