Kiwanis Kiddies Take Over Program With Variety Show
The sons and daughters of Kiwanis took over the program from their dads Tuesday at the Country Club of Coral Gables and presented a variety show that had the civic club members glued to their seats for quite a few minutes past regular adjournment time. A total of 48 youngsters, with the girls outnumbering the boys 26 to 22, were present for the Father-Child Day luncheon, ranging from kindergarten to post college age. Bell Recites With Tommy Mayes, son of Commissioner Thomas C. Mayes acting as master of ceremonies, the program opened with Paul Bell reciting Edgar Guest's "How to Win". Rhoda Ware followed with a recitation, "The Clock", following which Betty Gaskin presented a piano solo, "Gypsies Are Coming". Carol Harding also displayed her prowess at the keyboard with a selection, "Chapel Bells". Provoked Laughter Martha Jarvis had the Kiwanians roaring with laughter as she recited "Foolish Questions", following which Bobby Sutton and Dennis Jarvis, garbed in cowboy chaps, sang "Home on the Range" accompanied by Billy Sutton. Their selection was temporarily delayed when Pianist Sutton got the wrong cue and started playing "Don't Fence Me In", but the error was soon rectified. With a phonograph record providing the accompaniment, Joan and Bill Gautier added Latin-American flavor by singing "Managua Nicaragua". The phonograph changed to martial air for an exhibition of baton twirling by Betty Sutton and Marilyn Mayes. Gives Recitation Nancy Ware told the tale of a sad old house in her recitation, "The House With Nobody In It", following which Ruth and Austin Rasco were presented in a piano duet, "Early Morning". The war against disease being waged by science was related to the Kiwanians by Adrianne Hoffman, a Citrus Grove speech champion. Douglas Sandberg, Jr., drew thunderous applause for his professional presentation of "Warsaw Concerto" at the piano. Education is Topic The weaknesses in the state's education program were ably presented by Billy Gray in his talk, "Education, What Is It's Future". The program was climaxed by the appearance of the Kiwanis Children's Rhythm band, trained by Mrs. O. B. Sutton and led by a diminutive majorette, Dorothy Roberts. Band members included Caroline Roberts, Bobby Sutton, Billy McIlwain, Dennis Jarvis, Patricia Sandberg, Skipper Burkhart, Judy, Patty and Nita Boone, Lindsey Pankey and Judy Weil-and. Billy Sutton was pianist.
FRED MacMURRAY and CLAUDETTE COLBERT find that you can't learn chicken-raising from a book in "The Egg and I," hilarious picture at the Parkway Theatre Friday through Wednesday, June 13-18.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S bold story of big game and exciting adventure is brought realistically to the screen in "The Macomber Affair" starring Gregory Peck, Joan Bennett and Robert Preston. The film will be at the Grove Theatre Saturday at 9:30 p.m. and Sunday through Tuesday, June 14-17.

Local Poinciana Tree Draws Huge Throng of Admirers
Over 1,000 people came to see and exclaim over the beauty of the prize-winning Royal Poinciana tree in the yard of Mrs. Paul Roberts, 302 Ridgewood Road, during the past week-end, it was reported to the Riviera-Times. Mrs. Roberts' tree was awarded top honors, together with W. A. Orvill of Miami, when judges declared a tie in the annual Royal Poinciana Festival competition held last week. "They came in cars and in sight-seeing busses, starting Friday morning," Mrs. Roberts said. "I believe that there were at least 1,000 people there on Sunday alone." She also reported that over 50 color pictures were taken by camera enthusiasts over the week-end. Mrs. Roberts also wanted the fact emphasized that her home is in Coral Gables and not Coconut Grove, as reported by a Miami newspaper last week. The Royal Poinciana festival was climaxed by the Queen's Ball at the Country Club of Coral Gables.
