Rogers Tells Reasons For Resignation

Charles E. Rogers, who resigned as first chairman of the Recreation Advisory Board, cited business and personal reasons Tuesday for his move. Rogers, who could not be reached for comment last week after Mayor Robert L. Searle announced the resignation, said his new sales position with Gables Engineering Co., an electronics manufacturing plant, was the main factor. The mayor had declined to make the contents of Rogers' letter of resignation public. Rogers said also that he felt that the board should meet only to consider requests made by the City Commission and not meet to stimulate its own action. This was a point of disagreement among the board, with some members feeling that it should initiate activity. Last week's meeting between the City Commission and the board revealed that a majority of both the Commission and the board favored an active board that would be self starting as well as carry out requests of the commission. Tuesday, Rogers declined to elaborate on rifts between some of the board members over various matters.
