ALBERT SOMERS MAKES HIS POINT 'You Don't Chase Girls Any More, But Bet on an Occasional Horse'
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter Albert Somers is 67 and alone. Maybe you've seen him. Almost each morning, this well-dressed, rather distinguished looking man with a grey mustache sits on a wooden bench outside the Fire Department on Salzedo Street. He has no family. He lives on a pension. On the bench, he reads his paper. "And so each day your pleasures are simple," he said, putting down his New York Morning Telegraph. "You don't chase he girls anymore," he said with a twinkle in his eyes. "No more night-clubbing, just a couple of beers in a nice, quiet place. "And the time goes." Somers was a campus policeman at the University of Miami. Retired in January, he's allowed to live at San Sebastian Men's dormitory. So, "if the sun's shining," he walks the 11 blocks from the dorm to his bench at about 10 a.m. each day. "I could hang out at the University," he said, "I'm interested in what the students say, but they don't want to have anything to do with an old toddy like me. "So . . . sometimes . . . I find a few, old congenial souls at the bus terminal." "You've got to meet an old professor who hangs out at the dorm," Al went on," taught at Harvard for 32 years." He shook his head, "Great old character. I like him very much. And sometimes the old professor and I like to go over to the Pub and have a couple of bottles of beer." It was then Al nodded to an elderly man, who, with newspaper in hand, sat on the next bench. The man opened the paper to a particular page and began to study it. In his hand was a pencil. "There's another old horseplayer," Al said softly. "You know, you can always tell a horseplayer, he looks poor and he's got holes in the bottom of his shoes." Al leaned over and studied his bench buddy. "Hmmm, he looks good." It was approaching 11 a.m. and about time for Al to head back to the dorm. He skips lunch each day. Does his own laundry to save money. Walks a bit before dinner at 4 p.m. Hits the sack at about 10 o'clock. "Don't you ever get lonely? Is your life as full as you want it to be?" Al was asked. He shook his head vigorously. "I love life; I love horses. But you don't have money to run out to the track each day." Al said this would take $1 bus fare and $2 for admission. "So every once in awhile," he said with relish," you hand a bookie a dollar and it gives you a thrill."
