Metro Only Gets Burned Once, Says Robert Haverfield

(Editorial on Page 4) Metro will not make the same mistake with the Homestead area refinery that the City of Miami made with its Coconut Grove incinerator, County Commissioner Robert Haverfield told the Citizens Committee here Tuesday. "We realize that if we don't do it now it won't be done," Haverfield said of the protective measures that must be taken to safeguard the area from air and water pollution. Haverfield saw the refinery, already approved by the Metro Commission and opposed by a group of area citizens, as the wedge to get badly needed industry in Dade County. "This will give us a cheap source of power," Haverfield told the Committee. This is something Dade county does not have and without it no substantial industry will come, he said. Reflecting on the Miami incinerator that has been giving Coral Gables residents a constant source of griping, Haverfield said, "It was represented that it would not be harmful to the area. It turned out to be harmful." But Metro will not make the same mistake with the oil refinery, Haverfield predicted. A group of independent engineers will be sought to advise the Commission on setting up protective ordinances to insure against contamination of the atmosphere and ocean, Haverfield said.

Cigaret Fire Badly Burns Visitor Here

A 45-year-old Pittsburgh woman was seriously burned early Tuesday afternoon when her clothing caught fire as she smoked a cigaret while sitting in a lawn chair. Florence Weisberg, who was visiting her sister, Mendy Welcher, 1808 Granada Blvd., is reported in "satisfactory" condition at Doctors' Hospital. She suffered second degree burns over wide areas of her body. The Gables Fire Department, which answered the call for a house fire, rolled out all the equipment from the downtown station as a normal procedure. Firemen conducted a test of a few shreds of remaining fabric from the woman's clothes and found them extremely flamable. A small piece of the burning material dropped off and nearly set fire to a newsman's trousers as he watched a demonstration.

Rep. Judd Talks Here; Big Crowd

America's failure to take a firm stance in Cuba, Viet Nam and Berlin has caused Asian nations to lose confidence in us, Rep. Walter H. Judd (R., Minn.), told Gables Rotarians Friday. Judd, just returned from a six-week tour of the Far East, was impressed with the progress made by Asian nations. "I was amazed," he said, "at the progress which many Asiatic nations have made since my last visit two years ago." Judd, a leading conservative Republican spokesman and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, drew 166 Rotarians and visitors, one of the largest crowds. Members of other civic clubs had been invited to hear Judd.

Rader Study Is Shown Two Boards

(Editorial on Page 4) The confidential Rader Report—a study of zoning and high rise problems in Coral Gables—was presented to the Planning and Zoning Boards Jan. 24 by Rader Associates. Next step is for a series of public hearings on the plan, which will then reflect the thinking of Rader, the City Commission and the Planning-Zoning boards. The meetings are to be set by the City Commission at a later date. Afterwards, the report's recommendations will be completed and made public. Out of the meetings will come the final decisions of the City Commission. Although the preliminary report has not been made public, the decisions of the City Commission have been influenced by its findings.
