by helen reynolds society editor It's party time Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hanna, 4711 University Dr., and an annual event with Audra and Bob when they invite their friends in for dancing (to hi-fi) cocktails and food from 7 p.m. until? Guests will include Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thatcher of Milwaukee who come down every winter for a vacation and also Mr. and Mrs. Lester Olson of Tampa. Yetive Olson and Audra have been friends since their high school days. Also the Hannas', two daughters, Betty June and Audra, and her hubby, Dick McKim. ★ ★ ★ An Opera pre-treat for members of the Coral Gables Music Club who are planning to attend "Turandot," the next grand opera to be presented in February, will take place Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Roberta Keyes, 6820 Riviera Dr. The story of the second opera will be told by Mrs. Keyes. Excerpts will be sung by artists from the Opera Guild. ★ ★ ★ Once a month the Episcopal Women of St. Philip's Episcopal Church hold a meeting in beautiful Sewannee Hall, adjoining the Church where its 340 members gather for reports, plans and luncheon. There are 10 chapters, each chapter headed by a chairman. Jan. 18, was the day of the meeting and Mrs. Victor G. Freitag, 818 Mariana Ave., of St. Anne's chapter, read the report. The Rev. John G. Shirley, rector at St. Philip's, gave a prayer, introduced Dean Klein of Nashota House, a seminary in Milwaukee, who was making a lecture tour. Two of St. Philip's yound men, David Kennedy, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kennedy, 728 Alhambra Cir., and Sterling Rayburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Q. Rayburn of 835 Andres Ave., are students at Nashota House. Mrs. Winston Wynne, 6300 Casteneda Ave. and Mrs. Harry N. Moss, 518 Sevilla Ave. were in gales of laughter when someone had said in passing to Mabel Wynne, "I hear you're a mother again." Wait a minute, Mabel said, "You don't mean mother, you mean grandmother." "You know," said Hosey Moss, "we ought to start a grandmothers' club." Mrs. James Shields, 437 Valencia Ave., looked smart in a jacket suit of gray and black with matching turban. It was nice saying hello to Mrs. James Ammen, 1225 Coral Way, and we all felt sorry for Mrs. Rayburn on crutches, due to a broken metatarsal bone in her left foot.
MRS. ROBERT J. WESTCOAT
Westcoats on Honeymoon In Mountains of Carolina
On a wedding trip to the Carolina mountains are Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Westcoat following their Saturday wedding at the Church of the Little Flower. The bride is the former Miss Geraldine Kersting, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome J. Kersting of 600 Alcazar Ave. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Westcoat of 2028 SW 12th St. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white chiffon, over satin wedding gown designed with fitted brocaded bodice, bracelet length sleeves, round neck. Her shoulder veil of illusion fell from a crown of pearls and sequins and she carried a bouquet of roses, stephanotis and baby's breath. Mrs. Martin Greenbaum, sister of the bride, was matron of honor for her sister and only attendant. She wore a gown of royal blue satin with matching accessories, matching head veil and white gloves, and carried a nosegay of orange flowers. Cosma Vitale was best man. Ushering were A. H. Westcoat, brother of the groom, and Martin Greenbaum. The Rev. Fr. Armaunde Gregorie officiated at the 9:30 a.m. nuptial mass and the bride and groom exchanged rings. The reception took place at the home of the bride's parents. For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Kersting wore a blue silk sheath with matching jacket and matching accessories. Mother of the groom wore a blue suit with white accessories and both matrons wore gardenia corsages. The bride is a graduate of Coral Gables High School. The groom, also a graduate of Coral Gables High School, recently served at Donaldson Air Force Base, Greenville, S.C. and is now a student at the University of Miami. It is of interest that the bride, one of six children of the Kerstings', was the fifth to wear her mother's single strand of pearls at her wedding.
Ferns Among Entries Sought for Flower Show
Does your garden boast an adder's-tongue? Or an ostrich-feather, a rattlesnake or a hare's-foot? Some South Florida gardens harbor these and other varie- ties of ferns, many with even stranger names. Among the most intriguing are the taintwort, the kidney, the interrupted and the dragon's-bridge. All of these ferns, and a profusion of other decorative plants and flowers, may be seen at the Flower Show of the Coral Gables Garden Club. This will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10 and 11, in the Armory on the campus of the University of Miami, at 5600 San Amaro Drive. In recent years there has arisen widespread interest in ferns. Few plant families are so generally admired but so little known. Once all sorts of medicinal virtues were ascribed to them but today they are grown chiefly for the grace and beauty that is perfected in their foliage. Thoreau wrote that "Nature made ferns for pure leaves, to show what she could do in that line." In our warm, moist climate it is easy to grow exotic and luxuriant ferns. The public is invited to exhibit any worthy specimen. Exhibits should be brought to the show on Friday, Feb. 9 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cut flowers should be brought on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 7:30 to 10 a.m.
