'Support Your University' Contest Wins Contest First Time -Gives Away The Prize
A mother in her 70's will stroll down Nassau's sun-splashed beaches. A former humor columnist will slip into a crimson red brocade gown. And a daughter in her early 20's will gown herself in a full length, pink and white silk organza attire. These are the recipients of prizes in The Times' recent "Support Your University" contest. Gives Prize Away First place, a trip to Nassau, was won by Mrs. Arturo Vergara, 5900 SW 49th St., who will give the trip to her mother. Second place winner was Mrs. Noel Bronson, 11840 SW 185th St. Third place went to Mrs. Jean Zide, 6400 Miller Dr., who will give the prize to her daughter. Travel, Inc., is sponsoring the Nassau trip. Beth Weber is presenting the red brocade gown and Gaby's is awarding the silk organza attire. "That's Wonderful" "Oh, my goodness . . . oh, that's wonderful," chirped Mrs. Vergara, who won the Nassau trip. "I didn't really expect to win. I never do when I enter these contests. "The reason I wanted the trip," pointed out the wife of a retired physician, "is not for my-self, but for my mother. She's in her 70's and loves to travel. But she has never traveled outside the United States." Mrs. Vergara, who said she'd entered contests before but won "nothing of any importance" until now, said no one knew she had entered the contest. "I was reading through a stack of papers" she explained. "And I came to The Times. And I read it as usual. I noticed all the prizes and I said 'My goodness, I wonder what this is?' " First Time Winner So the woman who has entered contests for the past 12 years jotted down in 20 words or less why she wanted the trip. Since the Nassau trip received the most votes, it became "first prize" and Mrs. Vergara's entry, the best, won the award. Mrs. Bronson, who won the red brocade gown, said it was the first time she's ever won anything. The mother of six children bubbled over with happiness when she learned of her luck. Mrs. Zide, who won the silk organza gown, said she's giving the attire to her daughter. "She's excited . . . and so am I," said the mother. "We were talking one day," the mother continued, "and she said 'I've got a formal to go to and I don't have a thing to wear.' " Mrs. Zide, who has entered one radio contest before, entered The Times' contest and won the gown as third place award. The contests' three judges were Ruth Foreman, executive director of Studio M, Frances Beecher, head of Pygmalion modeling agency, and Bert Burris, advertising director for the City of Coral Gables.

Canal Killed By Metro, Coral Gables
(Continued From Page One) mendations that a salt water intrusion line be established from the northern boundary of Broward County to southern end of Dade County. The committee said canals crossing the salt water intrusion line may be approved if dams could be constructed to prevent salt intrusion. At a meeting Oct. 3, the committee heard conflicting engineering reports on the probable effect of the Rovin canal on the area. But one report, that of Howard Klein, of the U. S. Geological Survey, convinced the committee that the salt water intrusion line was significant. Klein brought out that if the Rovin canal was dug, there would he difficulty in keeping salt water out of Snapper Creek Canal. The County Commission had voted August 2 to permit Rovin, a Coral Gables developer, to cut a canal through Matheson Hammock, a county park, to permit Rovin's Hammock Oaks subdivision to have access to the bay. The excavation allegedly would push the county's salt water line back 1800 feet and threaten present fresh water wells used by property owners and City of Miami to service homes, swimming pools and air conditioning near the proposed canal.
